Job Summary: This position has responsibility for leading QIC's efforts in the areas of food safety and quality. Food safety is QIC's single highest business priority. The quality of our products and, the interaction with our customers related to quality, are a significant, defining characteristic of QIC's marketplace positioning. Consequently, this position plays a key role in QIC's success and reputation.

Job Context: QIC views food safety as its first and most significant priority as well as its greatest business risk. Our aspiration is to perform at world-class levels. QIC's food safety systems today are excellent and we regularly invite external, formal and informal, reviews of our processes and procedures. However, we also realize that due to the significance of food safety, it is the single issue that represents the greatest business risk to a small company. Consequently, this position plays an instrumental role in driving, throughout QIC, continuous improvement within our food safety and quality function. This position requires an individual with a technical background who has demonstrated the ability to successfully work with individuals at all levels and functions within the organization. Successfully working with varied external stakeholders (regulatory agencies, customers, vendors, etc) is also a key requirement. QIC is a small company; the candidate should be capable of operating at both the strategic and tactical levels and be comfortable with personally "rolling up his/her sleeves" to lead projects and work to resolve problems. This position carries the title of "Manager", but it is very much a hands-on, "working Manager" role. It requires the incumbent to personally complete many responsibilities (including some that may not be management, or management level, responsibilities).


  • Develops, documents, oversees, ensures implementation, and reviews company policies, programs, standards, and procedures related to food safety and quality assurance with a focus on prevention, early detection, and waste reduction; ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. Examples include programs related to CGMP's, HACCP, SQF, allergens, product recall and traceability, customer complaints, pest control, foreign material, chemical control.
  • Provides leadership to Quality staff in their lab and documentation work.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of government and industry quality assurance codes and standards; responsible for overseeing and advising (at a high level only) on select food regulatory issues. Scope includes standards applicable directly to QIC as well as the end markets our customers participate in.
  • Oversees third party and regulatory audits; ensures robust corrective action program
  • Ensures food safety and quality records are controlled, accurate, complete, and current
  • Owns customer quality complaints and issues, ensures they are promptly investigated and addressed, spearheads customer communication, ensures that QIC operates a robust corrective action program, and tracks results accordingly
  • Develops and implements a highly disciplined problem-solving process incorporating cause and effect analysis, root cause analysis, corrective action, and follow-up; process is applied to both internal and customer originated quality issues
  • Develops and provides organizational training on quality related topics
  • Conducts internal audits to assess performance against polices, practices, standards
  • Develops and implements supply chain programs to ensure safety and quality of incoming raw materials
  • Leads and manages improvement projects

Education/Experience: BS or MS in sciences (Food Science, Chemistry, Microbiology preferred); 10 or more years related experience in the food processing industry; minimum 3 years leadership/management experience. SQF certification required. Demonstrated experience/certification in CI/SPC and process management highly desired.
