POSITION TITLE: R&D Food Scientist

LOCATION: Chicago IL

REPORTS TO: R&D Lead

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This position will be part of the R&D organization and will support projects within the Low Calorie Sweetener category. This position will support activities throughout the development cycle, concept through commercialization, and projects will include NPD, cost optimization, quality improvements and brand maintenance. This position will be responsible for formula development, product validation (small and large scale) and project management. This position has a strong linkage with its cross-functional team members, including operations, quality and marketing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for development, management and execution of programs to scale up new products to market, modification of existing products and product improvements.
  • Develop and execute research plans at bench top, pilot plant and plant scale.
  • Execute qualifications protocols and validation plans in conjunction with manufacturing and quality teams.
  • Responsible for Validation Protocols, Product Specifications and BOMís in line with internal Merisant standards.
  • As project lead, ensure that projects milestones and critical path are identified, scheduled and tracked or met.
  • Present status of projects upon request with appropriate level of detail according to the audience.
  • Responsible for interface with R&D, Manufacturing, Marketing, and Quality Assurance to facilitate transitions between new product development and full-scale manufacturing.
  • Identify ingredient vendors and support feasibility evaluation.
  • Support packaging and process R&D with development and validation, as needed.
  • Work with R&D innovation lead to help scope concepts, develop prototypes and scale up new innovation.
  • Identify cost savings opportunities to existing processes.
  • Travel is project related but could be 15% to 20%. QUALIFICATIONS

Functional/Technical Competencies

  • Minimal of 1 to 3 years of experience in product development.
  • Technical knowledge of ingredient functionality, sweeteners and dry blending.
  • Understand the Marketing and R&D processes.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Skilled in Microsoft office
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize, initiate and drive to completion.
  • Ability to interact with internal and external customers in a professional manner.
  • Self-motivated and excellent problem solving skills as well as a team-oriented attitude.
  • Able to analyze data, make decisions/ modifications to processes and communicate benefits of decisions/ modifications to all levels of project teams/ management.

Education

  • Bachelorís of Science in Food Science/Chemical Engineering/Technical Field or equivalent combination of both education and experience.Equal Opportunity Employer: disability/veteran
