Food Scientist- R&D Product
The Food Scientist- R&D Product Development will
work in a lab and manufacturing facility that produces extruded snack
pellets. This role is both a strategic and a tactical in nature, and is for
someone who enjoys the challenge of helping to formalize the R&D
function at JR Short. Working closely with the Director of R&D, the
Food Scientist will be managing and/or executing technical projects to meet
business initiatives focused on New Product Development, including: new
process and product developments, process and product improvements,
conducting lab scale and bench top experiments, commercialization studies
for new products, conducting product characterization studies, applications
and performing analytical work. The Food Scientist will also support
technical research and customer support on existing and new product lines.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages and leads research
projects to design, develop and improve new and existing product
- Works closely with Operations,
QA and functional business partners to develop and test product
development solutions for top tier new product launches and to
troubleshoot issues with existing products and processes.
- Oversees and carries out
hands-on internal bench top and pilot scale trials.
- Leads scale-ups of pilot plant
test run preparation.
- Oversee R&D technical
functions such as sensory, shelf life testing, legal label claims,
product specifications, and nutritionals.
- Establishes analytical methods
to study the characteristics of snack pellet products.
- Screens past and current
production samples to establish a baseline for key physical, sensory
and functional attributes of JRS products.
- Maintains documentation of all
aspects of project work.
- Assists in the preparation of
presentations and reports to communicate results.
- Understands regulatory
requirements and work to ensure compliance.
- Performs other duties as
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- BS degree in Food Science or
related field required. MS degree in Food Science or related field
- 0-3 years of experience in
process or product development and commercialization; new grads should
have an internship in Product Development. Knowledge of extrusion
science a plus!
- 1-2 years of bench top
laboratory and pilot plant experience preferred.
- Excellent communication,
influencing, and problem solving skills
- Highly self-motivated
individual comfortable working individually and able to manage
multiple tasks and projects efficiently within the context of a
fast-paced, busy environment
- Ability to apply prior learning
or scientific principles to new situations
- Ability to exhibit a
collaborative mindset and apply innovative solutions are a must
- Knowledge of Food Safety, HACCP
