Position Overview

Reporting to the R&D Manager, the R&D Laboratory Technician's primary responsibility is to provide sensory testing and evaluation of both raw materials and finished goods to ensure that quality standards are with project specification and provide accurate nutritional product information.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assemble raw materials panels for all products and maintain results in QA database.
  • Provide concept ideas, bench top samples and technical support to project teams early in the product development process.
  • Participates in recipe development pilot trials to ensure successful new product ramp up.
  • Responsible for standardizing trial batches, sample submissions to customers and documenting results.
  • Responsible for the preparation, set-up and test processing of raw materials, finished products and retention samples.
  • Assure technically sound sensory panels are conducted for product development, self-life studies, product improvement and competitive testing in order to meet product objective and Gehl Food quality standards. Maintains all data and results to maintain proper records and ensure compliance.
  • Analyzes data acquired through testing processes to determine the suitability of raw ingredients/materials and participates in process improvement regarding ingredient purchasing, sampling and processing.
  • Collaborates with the R&D Manager to manage the department's shelf life program to ensure that protocols and processes exist which support customer expectations and business objectives.
  • Work collaboratively with outside suppliers, customers and various departments (Manufacturing, Engineering/Maintenance, Quality and Purchasing) to determine equipment, materials and processes necessary to produce products that maximize capacity and optimize product quality and differentiation.
  • Maintains all laboratory equipment calibration records and preforms testing procedures on a daily basis to ensure customer and compliance standards are met.
  • Maintains all daily temperature logs to ensure results are maintained within acceptable ranges.
  • Analyzes data acquired through testing processes to determine the suitability of raw ingredients/materials and participates in process improvements regarding ingredients purchasing, sampling and processing.
  • Generates report data from GMP, sensory, non-conformance and complaint information to create detailed and informative reports to ensure proper ingredient usage and commercialization.
  • Ensures accurate product and ingredient information usage during customer pilot trials is shared with accounting department to ensure billing is completed in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure that required competencies to carry out these job functions affecting product legality, safety and quality are met in accordance with the Quality Policy and the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standard.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate/plant safety standards and with applicable regulatory requirements while following the company’s Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Food Science (or other science based area of study)
  • 2 years’ experience in a lab setting, ideally in a food manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge of various laboratory instruments and their use in performing testing and analysis on food products
  • Ability to follow all department policies and procedures; report and follow through on any deficiencies
  • Demonstrated ability using a PC and a proficient understanding of Microsoft office tools (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Creative problem solving skills, sound judgment and an orientation toward innovation
  • Must be timely and consistent communicator providing clear and concise information with the ability to follow through.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously while maintaining a strong attention to detail
  • Must have the demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage complexity within a single project and across multiple projects
  • Must be able to build credibility and appropriate rapport to deliver results within a diverse team
  • Must be a proactive thinker who understands the process and bigger picture goals

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science
  • Completion of "Better Process Control School - Aseptic Packaging"
  • Six Sigma Certification
