The Innovation Technologist is responsible for identifying new product opportunity and delivering high performance, innovative products that support all core brands. The responsibilties will consist of interacting with colleagues, cross functional internal team members, suppliers, internal plant personnel, and co-packers to develop projects including product improvement, line extensions, and innovation.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities and tasks are written as follows:

 

60% Project Development

  • Manage the technical portion of project development through the “Stage Gate” development process.
  • Provides cohesion among cross-functional teams, facilitating problem-solving and adding structure for resolution.
  • Work within the pilot plant requirements (scheduling, protocols, and food safety) and assist other team members as needed.

30% Product Cuttings and Customer Interactions.

  • Coordinate product cuttings.
  • Comparison cuttings are conducted in the Innovation Center kitchen to approve new or updated products.
  • Interact with customers to test developed products.

10% Industry Conferences and Information

  • Represent Smithfield at industry functions and conferences.
  • Stay current with food trends and technology.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Animal Science, Culinary Training or related field and at least 5-7 years of product development experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Comprehensive experience with USDA Rules and Regulations.
  • Must be able to identify consumer insights and translate them into finished products.
  • Creative and passionate about ideation and new product development.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills with demonstrated multi-tasking and project management skills.
  • Ability to uphold regulatory, company, and customer standards.
  • May be required to travel and must be able to represent the company at conferences and product presentations.
  • Possess integrity and the desire to do quality work.
  • Proven track record with working effectively as a business leader and with cross functional teams.
  • Excellent communication skills; strong oral and written language skills.
  • Able to communicate at both a technical and non-technical level.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

  • The majority of the time is spent in an office setting outside of the production plant. The plant environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.
