Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is a US News and World Report ranked national Tier 1 University currently experiencing tremendous momentum and entering a phase of rapid expansion, with plans to add up to 300 tenure-track positions over the next five years. As integral components of the University, the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station and the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources seek to fill a tenure-track position in the Department of Agriculture, Nutrition and Veterinary Science (ANVS) and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) for the position of Food Safety and Program Leader with emphasis on animal agriculture and health. This new nine-month tenure-track position is at the rank of either Assistant or Associate Professor. The incumbent will be housed in ANVS with a 60% appointment in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources and a 40% appointment with UNCE. The faculty member will have an overall 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% outreach appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to: 1) develop a nationally recognized and competitive research program focused on food safety, particularly in regards to food animal health and the production of safe, nutritious meat; 2) engage in scholarly activity with an emphasis in translational research; 3) obtain extramural grant support; 4) support undergraduate and graduate instruction by advising, teaching courses, and mentoring graduate students; 5) collaborate across disciplines and University academic units; 6) establish collaborative partnerships with faculty from UNCE to ensure research priorities are connected to the needs of the communities throughout the state, to translate research into maximum impact for community stakeholders, and to improve the competitive position of the Nevada animal agricultural industry; and 7) participate in statewide outreach in collaboration with UNCE. The Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences programs have over 300 students and have doubled since 2009 and currently have over 95 incoming freshmen. Teaching responsibilities will include graduate and undergraduate courses appropriate for and needed by the Agricultural and Veterinary Science majors in ANVS and will include developing, delivering, and periodically evaluating a not-for-credit food safety curriculum offered on-line, with the participation and support of Extension faculty and staff. The program leader will work closely with county-based extension educators to identify important curricular topics for develop of appropriate materials to meet audience needs.

UNR is the home of Wolf Pack Meats, a teaching-research meat processing plant established in 1967, which is one of the leading national educational facilities where students get first-hand experience. Wolf Pack Meats is a USDA-approved facility equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and spacious and climate controlled rooms.

UNR is Nevadaís land-grant and historic flagship institution of higher education established in 1874. With a growing and increasingly diverse student enrollment of over 20,000 including over 2,900 graduate students, UNR provides a comprehensive selection of degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. The scenic UNR campus, in sight of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, is located 45 minutes from Lake Tahoe and four hours from San Francisco and the Napa-Sonoma wine country. The Reno/Tahoe area is a recreational paradise, with nearby National Parks, world-class skiing and snowboarding, kayaking, hiking, and bicycling. Reno is home to an emerging technology sector, with a vibrant arts and local-food restaurant scene.

Required Qualifications

1) must have a Ph.D. in Meat Science, Food Science, Veterinary Science, Animal Science, or closely related field; 2) excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with diverse audiences along with the demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English; 3) research experience in food animal health and the production of safe, nutritious meat; 4) evidence of ability to design and implement experiments and prepare manuscripts; 5) evidence of teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications

1) postdoctoral training; 2) demonstration of external funding acquisition; 3) strong peer-review publication record; 4) evidence of formal teaching training; 5) extension work experience
