Product Development Chemist, Food Colors U.S. - (000607) - St. Louis, MO





Investigates and supports projects as defined by management, e.g., identification, extraction, and stabilization of new and existing natural colors.Performs scientific experiments in order to develop in-house knowledge and capability of natural color production.Assists in transfer of natural color extraction technology to affiliate locations.

         Utilize prior color pigment knowledge to conduct literature review and analyze botanical sources for shade expansion of natural colors.  

         Manage and support long term new product development projects for the commercialization of innovative natural color products.  

         Evaluate new extraction techniques, lab instruments, and pilot scale equipment that can be used to produce stable natural colors through techniques such as pigment encapsulation.  

         Develop process methods for the scale-up of new natural colors from lab to pilot scale and production.  Assist in screening and testing of existing botanical raw materials for the improvement of color yield.  

         Support Sensient Quality Control department in the analysis of new natural color chemistry.  

         Work with Sensient Supply Chain department to identify and procure raw materials that have potential as natural colorants.  

         Assist Sensient Regulatory department with technical information on novel natural colors that may require FDA approval.  

         Actively work with Sensient affiliate sites to promote transfer of natural color knowledge. 

         Collaborate with vendors to identify state-of-the-art color stabilization technologies.  

         Provide training to Marketing and Sales team on performance and functionality of new natural color products in applications.  

         Interpret FDA regulations regarding food colorants, both exempt from certification (natural colors) and certified (FD&C) colors.  

         Evaluate and match competitive natural and synthetic colors currently approved by the FDA. 

         Assist Technical Support Managers in developing technical brochures and specification data sheets for new natural colors. 



         Must possess at minimum two to four years of technical service experience in the chemistry of food colorants.  

         Knowledge of food and food related industries, and prior work experience with food pigments is preferred.  

         A Masterís degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Food Science is required.



         Requires technical expertise in the chemistry of food colorants.  

         Requires ability to react to customer requirements, analyze opportunities and problems, initiate and provide creative solutions.  

         Requires ability to organize and set priorities and to effectively communicate with internal and external clients. 

         Wrong decisions could result in damaged customer relations, and considerable inconvenience and disruption of operations. 

         Additional duties as assigned.
