Director of Quality  

Description

The Director of Quality will provide a solid QA/QC base for success and growth in Medford and the corporation as a whole. This position will lead the corporate QA/QC functions from product design through customer receipt and satisfaction across multiple manufacturing sites, company stores, wholesale customers, direct marketing customers and business to business customers. Further, this position provides technical capability to work with a diverse set of food, produce and hard good vendors and products.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Major responsibilities of the position are listed below. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Other duties, assignments and specific projects may be assigned at the discretion of executive management.

 

  • Oversee the corporate food safety program, maintaining top level certification, including procedure verification and maintenance, training, process review, and program validation.
  • Oversee the creation of product labeling and technical copy review.
  • Responsible for establishing testing criteria and requirements for hard goods.
  • Regulate the internal product identification system.
  • Manage incoming product inspections to ensure that product entered into inventory meets requirements.
  • Manage inventory expiration to ensure that perishable inventory is optimally utilized, and that product which no longer meets requirements, is properly removed from inventory.
  • Manage product withdrawals and recalls.
  • Manage internal audits and process inspections to verify that stated procedures are being followed and that requirements are consistently being met.
  • Manage product specifications and set requirements for shelf life, storage temperatures, shipping conditions, regulatory compliance in shipping, etc. for all perishable inventory and food contact packaging.
  • Maintain the program to verify cold storage conditions with regards to temperature, air flow, and ethylene.
  • Provide support to all Manufacturing, Product Design, Package Engineering, Customer Service, Warehousing and Distribution areas.  Communicate changes to facilitate meeting customer requirements. Work to solve issues as they occur to maintain the safety, legality and quality of products and services.
  • Responsible for the direction and supervision of staff. Allows for even work flow, professional/personal development, and appropriate support for department functions.
  • Assure compliance with FDA, USDA, and other regulatory agencies.  Assures corporate integrity with legal entities and regulatory agencies.
  • Analyze customer service adjustments, product issue investigations, audit results and other data to identify safety, legality and quality issues and creatively seek constant improvement.
  • Create, develop or devise procedures and specifications.        
  • Oversee QA reporting processes for key results.
  • Responsible for vendor qualification program and audits.
  • Responsible for Store food safety program, assistance in food safety issues and store audits.
  • Coordinate product supply efforts across departments to optimize fruit quality delivered to customers, for both in house and outside pack situations.  Provide technical expertise on fruit quality and expiration.
  • Manage the process of materials and methods review for successful production of new gifts which meet company and customer requirements.
  • Respond in a timely fashion to customer questions with adequate information to satisfy customer quality issues/concerns.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Position Requirements

  • A technical four-year degree in Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Food Science or a related discipline required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of technical experience with food and food-related products within a QA/QC environment. Product formulation and food production scale-up experience in a technical capacity would be helpful.
  • Knowledge of product labeling compliance.
  • 3-5 years’ experience building and managing a staff
  • 2-3 years’ experience in a fresh fruit or produce production environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of fruit quarantine requirements highly beneficial.
  • Knowledge of SQF certification criteria.
  • Project Management experience.  .
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Effective communicator (written and oral) who is able to build consensus.
