Position Summary: 

Primary function is to lead the development, communication, and implementation of product or process refinements to achieve improved quality, performance, and food safety.  Will work in a variety of process (fresh meat, freeze drying, extrusion, canning, baking and roasting) and business environments (lab, suppliers, academic institutions) to provide leadership in designing, analyzing, and implementing food safety, quality, and process improvement programs.  Independently identify new cutting edge approaches to manufacturing and quality that support our food safety and quality business objectives.  Support business strategies and commercialization process from a quality and food safety perspective


Primary Job Responsibilities

·         Identify, champion, and manage implementation of quality and food safety improvements impacting NV product lines.

·         Coordinate risk analysis and the development of action plans and programs to continually reduce NV risk profile.

·         Design, implement and manage programs, databases, and/or policies to track quality performance to aid in identification and implementation of continuous improvement programs.

·         Work with quality and operations to conduct on-going gap analysis of quality performance and work with applicable operational groups to eliminate identified gaps.

·         Work with R&D in testing impact of new processes and ingredients on existing product lines to validate efficacy and consistency.

·         Lead and/or participate in multi-functional teams of internal and external partners in driving innovations identified as NV priorities.

·         Support NV Continuous Improvement through identification of opportunities, research on proposed ideas and participation on implementation teams.

·         Work with sales and marketing to develop and implement effective tools to introduce impactful technologies to NV field sales and customers.

·         Deliver effective change leadership in the implementation of new processes or programs.

·         Collect and analyze statistical data to determine present standards and establish proposed quality and reliability expectations of finished goods.  Evaluate and act on testing data.

Skills and Technical Expertise:

·         Ability to understand the application and commercialization of applied research versus basic research.  Understanding of technologies used within a manufacturing environment; not research for the sake of research.

·         Strong computer experience including knowledge of Microsoft Office, statistics, and data analysis.

·         Ability to work with associates at all levels, both internally and externally.

·         Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems, handle multiple and sometime conflicting priorities.

·         Understanding broad food manufacturing processes, knowledge of pet food desirable.

·         Ability to design and execute experiments utilizing solid design knowledge.

·         Project Management knowledge.


·         Degree in food science, animal science, veterinary, or other biological science; Masters or PhD desirable.

·         Minimum six years’ experience in development, coordination, and implementation of research programs into functional manufacturing processes.

·         Experience in the food industry plant environment with an understanding of manufacturing processes.

·         Solid understanding of microbiology and food chemistry as applied to manufacturing environments.

Travel Requirements:    Primarily local, about 25% overnight.
