Research & Development Scientist - Intermediate (Salem,
Product Developers apply scientific and
engineering principles to develop new products and to modify existing ones,
then ensure that these new products or changes are scaled up smoothly into
routine production. They create the formulas, test them with
consumers, run the production trials to ensure that they are sufficiently
profitable and robust, and then create all documentation, specifications,
gold standards needed. They train and work with Production and QA
personnel on the product, and follow through until a smooth roll-out has been
achieved. R&D Scientists manage projects within their area of
expertise, largely independently, but with some oversight.
Essential Job Duties

materiel, ingredient statements, raw material specifications, finished
product specifications, quality indexes, etc. Helps QA to update and
maintain documentation for existing products.
regularly with Snyder’s Lance management, Marketing, Production, QA,
Packaging, outside vendors and the like. Keeps the various parties
well informed and keeps things running smoothly without unnecessary
conduct weekly Benchmarking review.
conduct quarterly Bill of Materials (BOM) audits.

have the responsibility of maintaining records for the organization of
samples tested (The Sample Test Reports)

Somewhat independent; work
frequently done independently by following practices and procedures while
occasionally having work checked. A good deal of initiative and
ownership is expected at this level.
This job has no direct supervisory
responsibilities. Supervises hourly staff and temporary workers on
specific assignments. Leverages informal networks for getting things
done. Sets up and conducts training programs for production staff.
Trains less experienced product developers. May be called upon to
assemble and lead cross functional teams.
Knowledge and Skill
Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and
interpret common scientific and technical journals. Ability to
respond to common inquiries or complaints.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems,
collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Uses
intuition and experience to complement data.
Computer Skills: Knowledge of Word Processing
software, Spreadsheet software, and Internet software.
Bachelor's degree from four-year
college or university (preferred but not required in Food Science,
Nutrition, Home Economics, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or
related discipline.) 3 years working in a food lab, food
manufacturing, or culinary environment; or equivalent combination of
education, experience, and certifications.
