The Research & Innovation Manager is responsible for working with appropriate executive leadership across the organization in developing and implementing all branding, packaging, advertising, promotion programs and new product development. This includes, but is not limited to: tracking consumer food trends, tracking and analyzing competitor activities for branded and private label product groups, and with the development of the new product pipeline. Supports product sales, seeks to reduce costs and extend the shelf life of existing and new products.

Education and Special Requirements:

  • B.S. or B.A. degree in food science, R&D, or related subject area, or equivalent directly related progressive experience with an additional three to five years of work experience.
  • M.S. degree in food science, R&D or related subject area, or equivalent directly related progressive experience is preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide the ingredient list, nutrition facts information and marketing terminology and images that appear on the product packaging that meets all regulatory requirements (FDA, USDA, FTC, etc.).
  • Conducts internal and external new product ideation sessions.
  • Develops, maintains and updates a new product development calendar and timelines that map out processes and deadlines tracking, updating and following-up with all individuals involved in the process.
  • Collects new product development requests and prioritizes and schedules bench-top development work. Also creates scope of work for each new product initiative for chefs/food technology team including specifications that may be needed for particular customers and/or targeted price points.
  • Generates ingredient statements and nutritional information according to the latest FDA and USDA label requirements, as well as marketing language and images for labels.
  • Coordinates with Operations department to schedule trial runs of new and revamped products.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of shelf life and quality checks on new products with the QA department.
  • Requires in-depth communication with customer R & D departments and personnel.
  • Reviews and sets standards for new product formulations using current food science practices in order to extend shelf life (avoiding potential food safety issues and improving organoleptic properties of the food).
