Position Overview

Reporting to the R&D Manager, the R&D Batching Technician is primarily responsible for batching, blending and preparing raw ingredients according to product formulas and required processing standards. This position is also responsible for sample and trial ingredient receipt, storage and maintaining the area in a clean orderly manner. The position is also responsible for obtaining samples, sample preparation and shipment of samples. The batching technician will also support lab task and bench sample preparation as needed.

Job Responsibilities

  • Mixes and/or blend ingredients, according to recipes to produce food products of specified flavor, texture, clarity, bouquet and/or color.

Responsible for carefully reading and following batching instructions to ensure appropriate materials are weighed, measured to blending and mixing specifications.

Observes gauges, valves and thermometers to determine if mixing chamber temperature is within specified limits and ranges.

Observes and listens to equipment in order to detect possible malfunctions, such as leaks or plugging. Reports malfunctions or undesirable results to the R&D Manager.

Set up, operate and tend equipment that blends, mixes or processes raw ingredients in the manufacturing of food products, according to designated formulas and recipes.

Select measure and/or weigh dry ingredients and oils, using English or metric measures and balance scales.

Responsible for properly transferring ingredient lots and other critical control information as instructed by the R&D Manager.

Responsible for reporting material used to Inventory Control.

Responsible for preforming several basic analytical testing procedures on trial finished product and raw materials.

Responsible for cleaning and running automated Clean in Place (CIP) equipment and follow all applicable procedures.

Inspect equipment after cleaning to ensure all residue(s) have been removed and store in appropriate area.

Maintains assigned work area and production environment in clean and orderly condition.

Safely operates forklifts as needed to keep assigned work area supplied with necessary production materials.

Actively participates in work team meetings.

Ensures compliance with Gehl safety standards and with applicable regulatory requirements while following the company’s Good Manufacturing Practices

Gather and store incoming samples, update logs, track for development use and manage proper disposal

Support lab activities including material inventory and ingredient management

Comply with department development and process protocols

Manage sample request by printing shipping labels, assemble packages and delivering to appropriate drop locations

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates Degree or 5 plus years relevant food manufacturing experience

Good mathematical calculations skills

Good computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel)

Proven Ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously while maintaining a strong attention to detail

Demonstrated organization skills, good attention to detail and observant

Demonstrated leadership and self-management skills

Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions in the English language

Ability to work in a fast paced environment, often with limited supervision

Must be able to build credibility and appropriate rapport to deliver results within a diverse team

Must be a proactive thinker who understands the process and bigger picture goals

  • Ability to lift, carry and empty containers weighing up to 60 lbs repeatedly

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four year college degree in Sciences, Engineering(or other manufacturing related based area of study) or 10 plus years of food manufacturing experience

Forklift experience

  • GMP, OSHA, Sanitation or Lean Manufacturing experience
