senior staff member, he/she is responsible for technical studies directed
toward the solution of entire problems or of assigned portions of complex

To execute and design experimental procedures expected
to yield information on his/her problem. To execute test protocols in the
pilot plant; production facility; or live production facility and collect
data to yield information on his/her problem.
To lead a number of professional and
non-professional personnel junior to himself/herself in the pursuit of
his/her technical studies.
To collaborate with staff members of other disciplines
from within and outside of the company on his/her assignments.
To gather information and to record observations and
analyze same as required to become familiar with the various aspects of the
problem at hand.
To prepare reports on problems assigned. Offer input on
the decision making process relative to the projects she/he works on.
Work closely with operations to test and implement food
safety intervention and process improvements.
To be able to assemble or supervise the assembly of
apparatus or equipment for required experiments and follow good laboratory
practices when working with cultures and chemicals in the lab. Display
proper aseptic technique for taking laboratory samples for microbiological
To understand the chemical and biological hazards
associated with the materials being used in the protocols being tested.
To conduct laboratory challenge studies with various
antimicrobial interventions vs. pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella.
Leads, trains, and assigns work to
lower level technicians as assigned.
Completes smokehouse operator certification
Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum
- A Bachelor of Science degree
in one of the following areas: Food Science, Meat Science, Animal
Science, Microbiology, Biology, or Chemistry
- Effective analytical skills
- Strong organization, written
and verbal communication skills
- Highly developed interpersonal
skills, including leadership and decision making
- The ability and initiative to
identify problems and opportunities, and to develop, recommend, and
implement effective solutions and courses of action
- The ability to work
independently with limited supervision
- A Master's degree in one of
the following areas: Food Science, Meat Science, Animal Science,
Microbiology, or Biology.
- A background in microbiology
