Ingredient Scientist - Sweeteners

This position will help determine and influence the sweetener platform strategy and lead key projects within the strategy.  They will be responsible for maintaining and building relationships with sweetener suppliers.  They will collaborate predominately with product development, sensory, flavor, and regulatory groups as well as procurement, and ingredient suppliers.

Responsibilities

·         Develop and execute work plans for key projects which may include bench-top formulation, sensory evaluation, consumer testing, pilot plant production, and product testing

·         Proactively surface ideas and projects based on sweetener expertise

·         Develop new ingredient specifications and lead the internal review process for new ingredients or changes to current ingredients

·         Use and be able to teach others how to use laboratory equipment to measure ingredient and finished product specifications

·         Independently lead informal taste evaluations, summarize comments and conclusions and facilitate next steps will little direction from manager

·         Proactively send out ingredients and finished product for testing and maintain database of results

·         Organize and facilitate supplier presentations to learn about potential new sweeteners and ingredients and application in beverage systems

·         Proactively search for potential new sweetener technologies with new suppliers

·         Maintain an electronic notebook of all formulas, evaluations, and results

·         With little direction from manager, evaluate new ingredients and alternate suppliers to identify potential cost savings opportunities

·         Develop and execute shelf life testing protocols for new ingredients

·         Work with product development teams to transfer learning and knowledge of new sweetener technology to new product development projects

·         Troubleshoot sweetener quality issues based on experience

·         Use experience and judgment to prioritize multi-task workloads and assignments

·         Work with suppliers to identify and evaluate sweetener modifiers

·         Bench-top development work may account for 50 to 75% of this position

·         May travel up to 10% of time

 

Competencies

·         Strong leadership skills as demonstrated through experience

·         Advanced written and verbal communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences

·         Advanced experience formulating carbonated and non-carbonated beverages and thorough understanding of ingredient functionality

·         Experience with sweetener modifiers in beverage applications

·         Experience with calculating calories and cost per case of finished beverage formulas

·         Has sensory acuity and appreciation to distinguish between sweeteners and changes in beverage formulation

·         Extensive experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

·         Attention to detail

·         Ability to use a design of experiments approach to evaluations

·         Development work with sweeteners including artificial and natural high intensity sweeteners and nutritive sweeteners

·         Ability to maintain a lab area with 5S requirements

Qualifications

 

·         Bachelor’s degree in food science, chemistry or biology required

·         3 years of experience relevant to position

·         Able to lift, push, and pull up to 35 pounds

·         Valid Driver’s License
