Food Scientist

JOB SUMMARY

Kahiki Foods, the premier provider of frozen Asian foods, is currently looking for a driven, results oriented, Food Scientist to apply scientific principles toward food products while managing the bench top development through plant trial implementation of new product development, line extensions, cost reductions and quality improvements. This position will provide regulatory and technical insight along with food science research support as a product and ingredient expert on all Kahiki branded and non-branded products.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and create timelines to formulate new products and modifying existing product formulas based on team project approvals
  • Develop products from concept to product launch that meet consumer satisfaction, profit margin, and fit within current production parameters
  • Manage R & D plant trials and product launches
  • Work with cross functional teams on projects and meet project timelines
  • Analyze test results, create presentations and present technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Conduct product showings and tastings
  • Provide technical assistance to Operations and QA
  • Conduct cooking validation tests and write cooking instructions
  • Participate in facilitating consumer testing
  • Create nutrition facts panel and ingredient statements for all products ensuring they meet required USDA claims
  • Plan and conduct the sensory evaluation on new ingredients, flavors and finished products, including shelf studies
  • Establish preliminary product specifications on new products and update as needed
  • Work with Procurement to source new quality and cost effective ingredients and complete documentation including specifications on new raw materials
  • Gain and share current technical knowledge and food trends including quarterly competitive reviews
  • Develop ideas for savings, innovation and quality improvements that are relevant to the business
  • Some travel required

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • BS in Food Science or related field required. Culinary degree will be considered.

Experience:

  • 2 to 5 years work experience in food industry, CPG preferred
  • Strong project management skills including planning and organizing many projects at one time.
  • Self-starter with minimal or no supervision required.
  • Technical knowledge and formulation experience a must.
  • Sensory and organoleptic abilities. Must be able to taste a wide variety of foods with no known food allergies.
  • Strong knowledge in food ingredient applications
  • Experience in new product development, frozen food, protein and sauces is desirable
  • Familiarity with sensory evaluation methodology for food product development
  • Excellent ability to collaborate and maintain cross-functional partnerships
