Based in our headquarters in Geneva, IL, the Applications Technologist selects and screens flavors to meet customer expectations, assists in prototype formulation, produces prototypes at benchtop for flavor application testing, and conducts pilot scale processing as needed. The Technologist contributes to building strong customer relationships through project interaction and participation in customer activities, and supports Flavor University courses as needed. With increasing experience, the Applications Technologist will manage customer projects and interaction independently, formulate product bases and prototypes independently, and participate in internal innovation and improvement projects, in preparation for roles with greater responsibility and leadership.
This position provides essential support that enables the Business Unit to fulfill customer needs in a timely manner. Due to the high volume of requests and FONAís customer centric culture, this position requires urgency, flexibility, and responsiveness. The role affords the opportunity to work with cross-functional partners like Sales, Flavor Chemists, Regulatory, Supply Chain, Production, Marketing and Research & Innovation to solve challenges, successfully execute customer projects, and gain continual learning opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Responsibilities:
Project Execution
Ensures timely and effective communication with customer, salesperson and internal partners
Follows internal practices and procedures to deliver high quality samples in required time frame
Modifies application prototypes and flavor systems based on customer feedback
Performs product analysis and testing as directed by Scientist
Ensures flavors/products are in compliance with all regulations and certifications
Develops flavor solutions for customers that meet cost and performance expectations
Utilizes best practices in recording and updating information regarding flavor descriptions, descriptors, usage levels, and performance in application in formula management system
Obtains all technical documents required internally or by the customer
Maintains customer specific information and supporting documentation by project
Continually builds sample library and standard sample list
Collaborates with Marketing on flavor selections and marketing initiatives
Ingredient Knowledge
Understands possible interactions between base ingredients, including flavors.
Builds knowledge on new ingredients, technologies and segments as they are identified.
Develops understanding of how new technologies apply to assigned projects and market segments.
Data Management
Properly documenst activities, conclusions and recommendations in lab notebook
Maintains documentation of all submission formulations in the formula management system, for a reliable history of customer activity & support
Lab Maintenance
Maintains and organizes own area in lab and shared areas
Stocks and maintains ingredients for lab use
Recommends new equipment and ingredients to better support market segments
Performs scale calibration and basic maintenance of other lab equipment
FONA Culture and Development
Leads development of Flavor University initiatives for customer-specific and general educational presentations
Presents and/or participate in Flavor University and Speakerís Bureau
Engages in industry events and professional organizations relevant to the market segments of responsibility or flavor industry
Demonstrates willingness, ability, growth, future potential, and financially contributing commitment
Continually grows and develops through continuing education courses and learning opportunities offered through FONA and outside professional organizations

Required Experience:
Required
Bachelor of Science in Food Science or related field
1 to 5 years of food industry experience preferred
Understands appropriate level of urgency based on customer needs and Business Unit alignment
Demonstrates ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and to redirect efforts based on demands
Has ability to collaborate and build constructive working relationships across the organization
Has strong analytical skills to discern/diagnose trends and issues and to troubleshoot and solve challenges
Is well-organized and exercises sound judgment in decision-making
Demonstrates ability to apply creative thinking and efficiencies in the project process
Is software proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Formula Management system
Has ability to work within teams in both lead and support roles (project dependent)
Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
