Quality Assurance Manager/ Director

The Quality Assurance Manager/Director manages the Quality Control Department at all AFF facilities. The position is ultimately responsible for all product quality and for the development, implementation, and administration of the documentation system necessary to maintain a controlled manufacturing process. The manager organizes and staffs AFF Quality Control Departments, conducting employee performance evaluations and assigning projects to the QC staff. The manager must ensure that QC and all applicable staff are trained on Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and provided with sufficient resources to do their jobs. The manager stays current with quality management technique and analytical technology, applying this knowledge to the cost-effective operation of the department. Responsible for all 3rd party audit programs and activities, including but not limited to scheduling, preparing for and participating in audits and any related certification process. Responsible for all customer complaint issues, resolutions and supplier rating/approval related to AFF’s Supplier Approval Program. Maintains a working relationship with inter-and intra-company departments such as Customer Service, Analytical, Production, and R & D regarding resources, production and product development and quality. Assists customers with product issues or technical questions. This position serves as SQF Practitioner and back up to the Vice President of Technical Services, QC Supervisor, and HACCP Coordinator when necessary.

The Quality Assurance Manager must participate in the following areas:

  • Manage and assume responsibility for all aspects of the QC Department, including department supplies, cleanliness and organization.
  • Take responsibility for the quality of all products sold from AFF facilities.
  • Determine (and develop, if necessary) specifications, test methodology, process critical points, sampling protocols, sanitation procedures, etc., to ensure a controlled and consistent process.
  • Supervise product labeling to comply with state and federal regulations.
  • Participate in and supervise organoleptic testing.
  • Risk analysis, verification and validation activities of Food Safety program, including review and creation of related documents to assure compliance with state and federal regulations. This includes, but is not limited to the following areas:


  • Work closely with the Document Team to maintain, create, and review company policies and procedures and train employees on those documents as needed.
  • Be familiar and involved with HACCP and HACCP test records, process control records, lab test data records, COAs from suppliers, finished product COAs issued to customers, computer storage and protection of QC records.

  • Prepare for and respond to internal, 3rd party, and regulatory agency audits.
  • Conduct new supplier audits and approvals, trouble shooting the process.
  • Conduct periodic GMP/sanitation audits of the facilities.
  • Develop and assure the execution of related corrective-action plans for all audits.


  • Assist with R & D projects, new product trial runs, and production scale-ups.
  • Assist with selection of new plant equipment, installation and validation.
  • Represent the company at professional societies, trade shows, and meetings with customers suppliers and regulatory agencies, etc.
  • Take responsibility for investigating, resolving and reporting on customer complaints due to product quality issues; communicate with customers regarding same.
  • Perform other duties and work on special projects as required by upper management.
  • Must have dependable, regular attendance.
  • Lead the development and implementation of Food Safety Fundamentals and the Food Safety Plan as outlined in the SQF Code .
  • Oversee the development, implementation, review and maintenance of the SQF Code.
  • Take appropriate action to ensure the integrity of the SQF Code.
  • Communicate to relevant personnel all information essential to ensure the effective implementation and maintenance of the SQF Code.

  • BS or BA in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology or other science discipline.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in quality control management.
  • SQF practitioner, or equivalent experience with SQF 2000 or other GFSI certification scheme.
  • Physically able to move about in a production and lab environment.
  • Must have visual acuity to evaluate sample appearance and use lab instruments.
  • Must demonstrate taste and aroma sense acuity.
  • Must report to any AFF facility according to company need, sometimes with same-day notice.
