Product Developer - Tree Top - Selah, WA
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Product Developer is responsible for formulating and commercializing food products for retail, foodservice, contract manufacturing and ingredient business channels. In addition to new product development, position provides technical support for existing product lines; cost innovation; providing technical support to internal and external customers; documenting formulas, specifications, and operating procedures; supporting business teams with customer visits and presentations.
This position reports to the Director of Product Development and does not supervise staff. The position works closely with other Product Developers, Sales and Marketing, Engineering group, Manufacturing/Maintenance group, Contract Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Packaging and Process Research.

∑ Develop food prototypes in a Lab or Pilot Lab that are commercially scaleable.Coordinate and oversee plant scale testing, commercialization and commissioning.Ensure product meets the consistency, quality, and safety attributes requested by the customer.Develop and maintain finished goods costing, formulation, specifications and operating procedures.Evaluate and adjust product formulations to meet manufacturing cost parameters, sales objectives and customer needs.Document progress in lab notebooks and product realization report.
∑ Manage projects of multidisciplinary teams in order to effectively scale up formulations from lab bench to commercial production.Provide strong technical support and leadership for cross-functional project teams.Effectively communicate expectations and outcomes.
∑ Provide ongoing management of existing products for the purpose of cost reduction, reformulation, troubleshooting or line extensions.Conduct ingredient research, cost & quality improvements to current products, shelf life improvement, and sensory research.
∑ Troubleshoot complex or atypical formulation, batching and processing problems by conferring with peers and stakeholders to resolve challenges.
∑ Design and perform shelf life trials, experiments, consumer trials, and applied research as required to commercialize new products.
∑ Travel to provide technical support to internal and external customers for the purpose of scale up testing, sales and marketing visits, or industry related events.Develop and maintain professional relationships.Assist sales and marketing in developing and delivering effective customer presentations and trainings.
∑ Develop innovative finished food applications for use in Business Development marketing presentations for the purpose of expanding our existing or new product lines and technology.
∑ Assist peers with completion of the departmentís high priority projects and technical work assignments.
∑ Effectively work in both a union and union-free environment at the various production facilities.
∑ Have regular attendance and work appropriate number of hours to get the essential functions completed.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY:
∑ Lab and pilot equipment, including process equipment and process and product testing requirements.
∑ Solid technical knowledge of food science discipline.
∑ General understanding of food laws and regulations.
∑ Mathematics and scientific weights and measurements.
∑ Strong understanding of scientific methodology.
∑ Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
∑ Effectively manage and lead multiple projects with multidisciplinary teams toward a shared goal.
∑ Duplicate formulas and make changes to existing formulas to meet target flavor profile.
∑ Accurately document formulas, specifications, and operating procedures.
∑ Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
∑ Accurately perform mathematical and scientific calculations.
∑ Speak in public and professionally interact at a technical level with internal and external customers and industry peers.
∑ Maintain confidential and sensitive information.
∑ Effectively organize, plan, and execute.
∑ Use computers and computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
∑ Meet behaviors established in Tree Topís performance management and development process.
EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION/LICENSES, AND TRAINING:
∑ A Bachelors degree in Food Science.
∑ Minimum of 3 years of experience in a fruit, beverage, or dairy product development role.
o Frequently lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 60 pounds
o Vision requirements: Constantly uses near vision (see clearly within 20 inches), depth perception, and color vision (to identify and distinguish colors), and frequently uses far vision (see clearly beyond 20 inches)
o Frequently talks
o Occasionally climbs, lifts, crouches, stands, walks, pulls, kneels, types, reaches, performs repetitive hand motions, pushes, stoops, grasps, listens/uses hearing, sits, and/or drives
o Types of exposures encountered: Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, odors or fumes, extreme heat/cold temperatures, loud machine/equipment noise, and/or electrical current
