Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is primarily responsible for supporting the QA and regulatory needs for International development and established International Denny’s franchisees.  This position will act as a liason between MBM, the freight fowarder and the franchisee to ensure all required documentation and relevant information has been secured for the importing of food and non-food items into the country of destination.

This position will also be responsible for the implementation and compliance measurement of vendor and distributor processes /procedures both internationally and domestically which are designed to ensure that food and related products used in the restaurants meet established quality and safety standards.

Job Requirements

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

  • Manage all aspects of product export for Denny’s International Franchisees including but not limited to: documents needed, product registration, product restrictions, shelf life needed, product labeling, duties and vendor lead times.
  • Identify and remain current on US regulations for export.
  • Identify and establish relationships with key regulatory agencies to aid in export including but not limited to: Ministry of Trade, US and Foreign Embassies, APHIS, United States Foreign Agricultural Service, Customs officials, USDA, FDA and local regulatory agencies.
  • Establish key relationships with vendors to identify and remove barriers for individual country imports.  Work to obtain necessary documentation such as Certificates of Free Sale, Harmonization Codes, etc.
  • Anticipate, communicate and resolve individual country regulatory challenges.
  • Assist Product Development in identifying and communicating any individual country cultural concerns when it comes to menu design
  • Establish working relationships with franchisee import brokers to assure understanding and application of individual country requirements, regulations and potential problems.
  • Work closely with international franchisees and New Restaurant Opening (NRO) team on initial orders to ensure all import barriers have been addressed so as to avoid product delays.
  • Maintain International APSLs for Brand Standards/HACCP Manual and develop APSLs for future specific international markets.
  • Responsible for monitoring and managing product safety, quality and consistency of approximately $600mm of food products and other supplies purchased by Denny’s.
  • This position will use recognized industry and regulatory practices and procedures to ensure brand protection by validating all current and potential vendors to the Denny’s system provide products that are safe, conforming and consistent.
  • Utilize protocols resulting in consistent product conformance to achieve an ongoing reduction in product recalls, under performing vendors/distributors and guest dissatisfaction.
  • Develop food and non-food product specifications yielding the optimum return to Denny’s based on guest preferences, favorable costs and operational execution. Specifications are developed with this position acting as a liaison between the vendor’s QA & Product Development teams as well as internal constituents involving Product Development, Brand Protection, Distribution and Purchasing.
  • Liaison with Operations to rectify product nonconformance.
  • Liaison with Operations & distributors to manage non-conforming deliveries.
  • Liaison with Operations to deliver product quality and approval solutions.
  • Liaison with regulatory and industry officials to maintain compliance with local, state and federal regulations; keep abreast of current industry issues and new technology trends.
  • Manage projects relating to new vendors, alternative sourcing and initial production runs.
  • Respond to restaurant hotline calls/complaints (products, equipment as applicable, regulatory requirements/requests). Multiple prong follow-up on individual hotline calls involving Operations, vendor and distributor in numerous cases.
  • Participate with weekly updates on all responsibilities, projects, etc.
  • Required to perform plant visitations/audits on key potentially hazardous product lines including but not limited to proteins and processed produce. Manage audits conducted on behalf of Denny’s by our approved consultants.
  • Review of third party audits for all current vendors, potential new vendors, broadline distributors, produce distributors and potential new distributors. Follow up with each entity as appropriate to clarify audit corrections.
  • Management of third party product evaluation program by initiating communications and follow through with vendors for any nonconforming product. 
  • Take ownership in bringing together parties necessary for resolving nonconformance issues where the results may include out of stock situations in the distribution centers and/or restaurants.
  • Cover and makes appropriate business decisions in lieu of department director, when the director is unavailable (e.g., vacation).  During this time, acts as liaison between peers in other departments or vendors/distributors and the department vice president.
  • Perform other duties, projects or research assigned by the Director, Quality Assurance or Chief Food Safety Officer, VP Brand Protection, Quality, & Regulatory Compliance.

REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE:

  • Excellent computer skills
  • Must have detailed knowledge of the US export process
  • Must have detailed knowledge and understanding of the technical and regulatory requirements for individual countries Denny’s products are exported to.
  • Detailed knowledge of a wide scope of different food product processes and protocols
  • Detailed knowledge of the chemical, physical and microbiological interactions of foods
  • Working knowledge of USDA, FDA and EPA regulations and GMPs
  • Working knowledge of HACCP
  • Must possess good written and verbal communication skills in order to interact with individuals at all levels of the company, franchise community and governmental agencies.
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish) preferred
  • Must be analytical and detailed oriented
  • Must have sense of urgency
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to handle and manage rapidly changing priorities and multiple tasks
  • Excellent planning/organization skills, meet project deadlines
  • Good people/leadership skills
  • A team player
  • Ability to work extended hours depending on the nature of supply issues relating to safety and quality, which may include nights and/or weekends.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • BS or BA in the Food Science, Food Technology or Life Sciences
  • MS preferred
  • 3 to 5 years in-plant or multi-plant /restaurant or other QA/QC experience.
  • Direct involvement in coordinating international quality and regulatory efforts
  • Spanish bi-lingual preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • 15- 25% travel (domestic USA, Canada and International) 
  • Overnight travel with field work in manufacturing and distribution environments with exposure to excessively cold or hot temperatures within the plant and around moving equipment/production lines
