Responsible for the innovation, development, testing, and scale-up of new products in the core business area (antioxidants and other shelf life stabilizers) for companion animals.  The incumbent will provide expertise in the area of formulation development to successfully guide and implement product improvements and new product development.  This includes understanding the interactions of pet food ingredients during their production and storage lifetime.


  • Help the antioxidant innovation team in identifying new research areas for development of new products
  • Focus and prioritize core business projects and assume responsibility for their success; lead two to three projects in compliance with the Product Innovation Process
  • Work closely with other functional areas to ensure that new technologies are developed in an efficient and timely fashion
  • Interact with sales and technical team, along with customers, to address technical questions and provide solutions to problems
  • Write and review various professional documents, both internally and externally
  • Assist in the preparation of patents and other Intellecutal Property decisions
  • Foster an environment of open communication and creativity
  • Keep detailed and organized lab notebooks
  • Ensure quality execution of projects, including design, data summary and interpretation. 
  • Play a role in the preparation of reports and manuscripts and reviews adherence to applicable regulations.
  • Perform literature searches
  • Adhere to laboratory standard operations and documentation (e.g. ISO 9000)
  • Develop methodology under minimal supervision


  • M.S.  in food science, food engineering, chemistry or biology; 3-5  years of relevant work experience in product development in the food industry, preferably the pet food industry. 
  • Demonstrated expertise in formula development, stability studies and establishment of ingredient and finished product specifications.  Experience in the stabilization and formulation with fats, oils, and protein meals is a plus.
  • Experience in basic food unit operations and impact on product functionality and stability.  Experience in food extrusion technology is a plus.
  • Experience in using advanced laboratory instrumentation including UV-Vis spectrophotometry, liquid and gas chromatography, and mass spectrometry is a plus
  • Advanced PC knowledge with MS Office and statistical analysis
  • Proven track record of accomplishments; accomplishments in commercialization of new ideas based on new technologies is highly desired but not required
  • An effective project team player, leader, and motivator
  • Practical knowledge of stage-gate processes is desired
  • The successful candidate will be detail oriented, highly organized, and motivated by accomplishment
  • Good organizational and prioritization skills and capable of simultaneously handling several tasks/duties of varying complexity and meeting deadlines
  • Reliable, self-motivated and able to handle multiple projects efficiently
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and protect intellectual property
  • Able to interact well with others in a team environment
  • Able to work in a changing work environment.
