Research & Development Intern

SUMMARY

  • This position will be responsible for assisting food technologists in process improvement as well as new product development
  • This position is a temporary part time or intern job directly reporting to a food technologist and requires working at food manufacturing environment. Success of this position is not limited to result accuracy of assigned tasks.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Analyze competitor products for moisture contents, pH, residual oxygen level in the package, colors etc using experimental instruments based on protocol and/or direction from a supervisor
  • Record and organize analyzed data in excel spread sheet to report to a supervisor
  • Summarize product declaration from package in terms of ingredient strings, nutrition, callouts and so on.
  • Analyze product attributes including physical size, weight and any specifics determining the product and summarize all findings in the excel spread sheet.
  • Gather and organize product quality data, not limited to moisture contents, weight variations and size, from the manufacturing processes
  • Obtain samples from production and process sample preps for testing
  • Assist product development activities by weighing ingredients
  • Assist in maintaining thorough, complete and timely documentation and record keeping as outlined in established SOP's and/or directed by the food technologist.
  • Occasionally assist with preliminary data analysis as needed under the guidance of the food technologist
  • Assist as needed under the guidance of the food technologist or designate
  • Assist with non-routine physical chemical analysis tasks, experiments, and product development related support as needed.
  • Adheres to and models good manufacturing practices (GMP) and good laboratory practices (GLP) at all times.
  • Maintains clean and organized work space, micro lab and practices “clean as you go” standard at all times.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Basic knowledge of food
  • Basic understanding of handling/manipulating analytical instruments such as a scale, pH meter etc
  • Good skills in MS office: excel, power point, and words

EDUCATION

  • Associates degree or equivalent preferred
  • A student in BS course in food, science, technology or related

OTHERS

  • Good listening skills and organization skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours; including evenings and weekends as needed with reasonable notice.
  • Not allergic to foods
  • No issues with cold and wet working environment.

Required experience:

  • Food Science or related: 1 year
