Job Summary:

  • Oversee and assist Director on all R&D-related projects
  • Manage all formula databases related to R&D
  • Manage Genesis nutritional information related to R&D
  • Work with customers in R&D lab, PDL and other Hearthside facilities in respect to R&D related projects
  • Assist as needed in overseeing trouble-shooting of any existing business at the PDL

Job Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage samples development and shipping of prototypes to customers
  • Create Genesis nutritional data as needed relating to new R&D products
  • Maintain direct interface with customers relating to new R&D projects at the PDL and main plants
  • Maintain laboratory notebook
  • Travel to other Hearthside locations when necessary to conduct and oversee R&D project startups and tests
  • Coordinate customer tests at the PDL and other Hearthside facilities and ensure materials are ordered and on site before test proceeds
  • Conduct pre and post trial meetings and report to relevant individuals.
  • Maintain a weekly 'time against projects' report to be sent to Director of R&D each Friday
  • Take part in conference calls with customers to develop working relationships
  • Maintain broad knowledge of customer products, technologies and processes
  • Interact with customers via phone or e-mail on a regular basis
  • Alert management or operations of any special instructions/ requirements based on customer expectations or requests concerning pending test runs or other requirements
  • Initiate status reports to customers when delays occur in responding to an inquiry
  • Take part in technical training programs provided by suppliers of materials related to Hearthside business
  • Some travel expected

Required Competencies & Knowledge:

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of general food technology, ingredient functionality and formulation
  • Working knowledge of R&D processes
  • Detailed experience in products related to Hearthside business
  • Autonomous and multiple R&D project management

Skill in:

  • Ability to handle both customer and employee issues
  • Assessing customer needs to resolve promptly and efficiently
  • Adjusting to the changing schedules driven by the customer
  • Building customer confidence with proper follow through
  • Writing effective e-mails to customers
  • Diffusing dissatisfied customer with calm, confident answers or solutions

Ability to:

  • Supervise and lead all customer related requirements related to R&D
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to all customers
  • Have knowledge of all customers and their expectations
  • Project HFS as world class production facility
  • Oversee temporary lab technical assistants and/or interns

Proficiency in:

MS Word, Excel, formula database, Genesis, raw material costing and inventory

Work Environment:

  • Work is primarily done in a lab setting but can involve the pilot and/or any number of main Hearthside production facilities (travel required)

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting at a work station for extended periods of time
  • Standing while creating product samples both in R&D and on the plant floor
  • Stand, walk, climb stairs on an infrequent basis
  • Working possible off-hours when required
  • Clean and order R&D lab at the end of each working day
  • Able to lift up to 25 pounds

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College degree in food science
  • 5 years or more experience of relevant work in a food production facility preferably in the manufacturing /production environment
  • 5 years experience in R&D and/or related environment
