About Virginia Tech:

Position Summary:

This position would be responsible for directing the Virginia Tech Food Innovations Program. Primary responsibilities of the position include:

•Oversee a statewide program and laboratory to assist food processors in the development and manufacture of food that is safe and in compliance with state and federal regulations.

•Communicate with and act as a departmental liaison to federal and state regulatory agencies including the FDA, the USDA, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).

•Collaborate with the food industry on microbiological research and field trials.

•Act as a food processing authority for acidified foods.

•Train and advise personnel in satellite offices in matters regarding food processing, food safety, and food regulations.

•Develop educational resources and provide education and training on safe food processing and relevant food regulations.

•Analyze food samples for microbiological safety and approve food processing protocols for safe production of food.

•Manage program billing, funding, and budget.

•Maintain and update the Food Innovations Program website

Required Qualifications:

An earned Master’s Degree in Food Microbiology, Food Processing, and/or Food Analysis Skills; Strong communication skills; Experience coordinating activities between multiple agencies; Experience developing educational and training materials.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience with food processing or food safety services.
