Research & Development Process Scientist
Ardent Mills - Denver, CO


This position is for Ardent Mills, a Joint Venture between Cargill, Incorporated, ConAgra Foods and CHS, Inc.

Position Purpose:

This position will support the development of Ardent Mills Innovation/Growth portfolios. The R&D Scientist will serve on cross functional teams to support translation of customer needs into R&D projects and customer solutions. This will entail the development and execution of scientific research; the analysis, interpretation and communication of results; and scale-up of commercial solutions with and for Ardent Mills customers. The Scientist must have excellent interpersonal, relationship building and communication skills; and be able to work independently or as part of a team across organizational boundaries within Ardent Mills and its customerís organization. This position reports to the R&D Manager.

Contributes to Innovation by supporting identification of short and long term customer projects
Supports execution of scientific studies to deliver novel grain-based solutions
Supports planning and execution of experiments starting from the laboratory to pilot and then commercial scale to develop functional solutions with clearly defined process and product specifications
Supports scale-up and commercialization of new solutions
Understands and complies with corporate IP policies and procedures and provides technical expertise to the development and protection of intellectual property within project scope
Collaborate with RQT to support the development and delivery of technical training for internal customers

Build External Collaborations

Proactively cultivates a broad network of contacts both within and outside the organization & actively uses network to support execution of Ardent Mills projects
Anticipates customer requirements through regular customer interactions & by staying abreast of trends
Boldly and proactively represent Ardent Mills via technical publications and presentations, and with scientific organizations and key customers
Independently prepares & delivers oral and written communication for technical/non-technical audiences

Essential Functions/Requirements:

Willing to travel up to 30% of time
Able to lift 50 LB (20 KG)
Willing to work (occasionally) in a plant environment
Able to work with and consume wheat products; i.e. no wheat /gluten allergies, intolerance or sensitivity

Required Education, Experience, Skills:

B.S. degree in Food Science/Engineering, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Grain Science, or Milling Science
6+ years of industry experience developing and commercializing grain based solutions
Strong technical knowledge (ingredient functionality particularly in Cereal Science/Baking and Milling Science)
Demonstrated technical curiosity, creativity, and ability to innovate (implement creativity to reach a business goal).
Demonstrated ability to organize, manage and execute multiple technical projects
Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a cross-functional team
Exercises independent judgment and discretion on the job
Highly motivated, self-starter, demonstrated ability to learn, not afraid to take on ambiguous tasks
Positive and flexible working style, able to develop a positive working relationships with others
Must be self-motivated, flexible, organized, with the ability to handle changing priorities

Preferred Education, Experience, Skills:

MS degree in Food Science/Grain Science with concentration on Engineering discipline (i.e. chemical, agricultural, process, biochemical)
3+ years of relevant professional experience developing/commercializing grain based foods and/or ingredients
Strong knowledge in engineering aspects of processing cereal/grain (e.g. thermodynamics, extrusion, baking, fermentation)
Demonstrated practical knowledge & application of milling science, cereal chemistry and statistics (Design of Experiments)
Thinks and acts strategically
Builds relationships and negotiates effectively with internal and external customers and vendors
Considers short/long term impact of competitive activity on customer needs and Ardent Mills operational capabilities
Promotes a culture of inclusion, collaboration and teamwork across organizational & industry boundaries
Comfortable & effective communicator of complex information to cross-functional audiences at various levels within an organization
Works with minimal guidance to prioritize resources, execute cross functional projects to deliver targeted results
Uses project management best practices to ensure on time & on budget commercialization of solutions
Provides timely and effective communication on complex issues to both internal and external customers
