 Primary Responsibilities Perform inspections to assist in the determination of the safety and quality of goods marked for import or export. Sample products for laboratory testing according to SGS or Client Guidelines. Perform loading (unloading) supervision of containers. Study and Abide by the SGS Inspectors’ Manual (handout) and Work Instructions for inspection, loading supervision and sampling execution. Report results according to standard SGS Inspection or Sampling Report format and on-time submission of reports to the SGS Food office, according to deadlines provided • Report to Inspection Coordinator of any risky information detected during the inspection process, or according to risk detection guidance provided by SGS management.
Conduct Inspections, loading supervision and sampling at ports, airports, manufacturing plants, warehouses, cold storage warehouses and other areas.
The Food Inspector is responsible for working closely with the Food Laboratory management, Field Services Operation team and Client staff to build long-term customer relationships, operational excellence and revenue growth.

Positions Available in Northeast, Southeast and South West, USA.


Specific responsibilities • At all times, comply with SGS Code of Integrity and Professional Conduct
• Ensure all the necessary forms, materials, equipment, and/or other requirements needed to perform the job are completed and prepared before proceeding to the work site.
• Coordinate with clients on schedules and other information pertinent to the job.
• Provide regular feedback and updates on the status or progress of the job to his/her immediate superior.
• Prepare and submit complete and accurate inspection reports including properly labeled samples.
• Perform other related duties as may be assigned either in support of departmental goal or for his/her personal or professional training, education or development as programmed by his/her superior.
• Complies with the QHSE policies including but not limited to:
o Demonstrate strong commitment to SGS QHSE Policies, Procedures, and Work Instructions by participating in safety meetings, completing required training, intervening in unsafe situations, refusing unsafe work, and complying fully with all applicable laws and regulations related to QHSE.
o Respond appropriately to emergency situations and assist other staff members in maintaining readiness to respond to emergencies within the workplace.
o In accordance with the SGS QHSE Management System requirements, dispose of, or direct the disposal of, waste generated as a part of daily work performed in a safe manner and in compliance with all waste transportation and disposal regulations and requirements.
o Report all incidents (actual incidents and near misses) in accordance with the SGS Incident Reporting requirements.
o Use all equipment (including safety equipment) in the manner intended and report any damaged / lost equipment to supervisor.
o Maintain a safe and tidy worksite.
o Maintain awareness of hazards and propose controls to supervisor, QHSE Representatives or relevant client / site contact.
o Actively participates in incident investigations and risk assessments as deemed necessary by SGS management.



Profile 1. Educational and Professional qualifications: • The ideal candidate should have an inspection, surveying, quality assurance, freight forwarding or customs background • High school education or GED. Must be hands-on, creative, proactive team player with strong persuasive and diplomatic skills.
2. A Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Food Microbiology, or equivalent is preferred.
3. Detail oriented, organized and inquisitive • Good customer relations skills are imperative • Must have a valid driver’s license with appropriate insurance • Must be able to communicate effectively in English both verbal and written. Second language (preferred Spanish) is a plus.

Skills • Minimum of two (2) years seafood production or QA/QC experience in multiple species and product forms.
• Knowledge and experience with factory QA/QC plans, manuals, and procedures,
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
• Accurate color vision is essential to notice subtle shades of product color in the detection of abnormalities that make a product unfit for human consumption.
• Additional Sensory Skills (sense of smell, touch/feel), are also essential in the detection of decomposition or abnormalities.

• This inspection activity is performed in a noisy industrial environment with large moving machinery that cannot be stopped instantly. Workstations and walkways can be extremely narrow and slippery. Excellent stability and balance is required. Frequent physical activities such as walking, climbing, standing, and kneeling are required, including climbing and walking on catwalks. Various environmental conditions, ranging from sub-freezing temperatures to frequent summertime temperatures at 80 to 90 degrees are common, with extreme humidity.
• Inspection activity requires rapid, constant repetitive motion with both hands and wrists. Some inspections may require the use and proper handling of extremely sharp knives.
o Capable of lifting 40-50 lbs on a routine basis.
o Occasional lifting of 70 lbs on a repeated basis
o Extensive physical effort.
o Ability to travel by plane or automobile, USA and internationally as needed.
o Handling hazardous microbiological materials
o Safety glasses must be worn at all times
