Food Safety Manager
American Nutrition - Woodland, WA

 

The Food Safety Manager is the onsite food safety authority at the facility. The position has the primary responsibility of driving and managing the food safety systems of the Ogden plants by developing, modifying, and maintaining the plant’s HACCP system, Microbiological Control Programs, and all associated programs, policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all corporate requirements for the production of safe and wholesome pet foods. Coordinate, manage and assist with broad-based projects as assigned, including, but not limited to: Supplier Quality Programs, Safe Quality Food Programs, Six Sigma Programs, Product Integrity Program, and Quality Systems.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

  • Assure that Regulatory programs (HACCP, SSOPs, SOPs) are implemented, understood, routinely assessed, improved upon and well-maintained.
  • Assure that GMPs and food safety procedures are understood, instilled at all levels of employment and monitored throughout all areas of the facility.
  • Assure that Microbial programs are implemented, routinely assessed, improved upon and well-maintained. These programs include but are not limited to: environmental monitoring and pathogen testing of products as directed by company policy.
  • Coordinate external and internal quality/food safety audits for the facility.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to drive selected quality or food safety programs. Examples include "monthly food safety facility inspections", "routine glass and plastic inspection", "HACCP team meetings", “Food Safety Committee”, "Salmonella Control Programs", and “Customer Complaints”.
  • Conduct training sessions specific to food safety and quality.
  • Travel as needed to other ANI locations, vendors, suppliers or customers.
  • Maintain KPI’s related to food safety, and internal and external audits and work with the VP of Food Safety & Quality Systems to generate and maintain performance metrics.
  • Drive the corporate Food Safety Objective (FSO) of Zero Salmonella.
  • Coordinate and assure conformance to Safe Quality Food (SQF) initiative.
  • Mentor and coach employees to foster the team spirit.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Must have one of the following: Bachelor’s Food Safety, Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Science, or other related field and at least three years experience in the food industry. Associates degree in Sciences with at least six years progressive experience in the food industry.
  • Strong organizational, leadership and communication skills.
  • Able to work with cross functional departments within the organization.
  • Good problem solving and corrective action/resolution skills; and strong computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience in Auditing, Inspections and Quality Assurance.
  • Technical knowledge of food safety and quality systems.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Must be able to work in a schedule-driven shift environment with a customer service orientation to support plant operations.
  • Pre-employment drug screening, background check, OAD survey required
  • Food Safety and Good Manufacturing Practices, including appropriate safety equipment apply. Job will generally be performed in a manufacturing environment.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be required to sit for prolonged periods of time, climb stairs, travel on man lifts, climb ladders and walk plant floors that could exceed one mile of travel per day.
  • The employee must have a full range of body movements including use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, computer equipment and peripherals; and bending, reaching, and crouching.
  • Must have command of all five senses, sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

These vision requirements in each area must be sufficient to shift in focus from computer screens to close forms:

  • Strength: Must have the ability to lift 20 pounds as required.
  • Must be able to understand and follow work instructions in English.
