Extension Consumer Food Safety Specialist, Washington State University (WSU). This is a 12-month, tenure track, faculty position at the rank of E-2 or E-3 (analogous to Assistant or Associate Professor), within the WSU Extension Youth and Family Program Unit. The person will participate as an affiliated faculty member in the WSU-University of Idaho bi-state School of Food Science. The position will be located on the WSU Campus in Pullman, Washington.
The WSU Youth and Family Extension Program Unit is a departmental unit of WSU Extension within the College of Agriculture, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) of Washington State University. The Youth and Family Unit seeks an inspired and highly qualified professional in consumer food safety to join a statewide team dedicated to excellence in outreach and applied research addressing current and emerging issues of consumer food safety. Collaboration and teamwork with the faculty of the Youth and Family Unit, other Pacific Northwest University Extension systems and Schools or Departments of Food Science are essential in achieving maximum impact and relevancy in consumer food safety across the region. This position is responsible to the Director of the WSU Youth and Family Extension Program Unit.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct informal and formal program need/opportunity assessments and utilize faculty, agency, and stakeholder input to formulate program plans for consumer food safety.
Develop research-based educational programs, materials and curricula to support Extension consumer food safety programs, including but not limited to food handling and preparation, preservation, food safety, cottage industry food development, restaurant food safety, food banks, using school garden produce, and responding to risk management during natural disasters.
Provide statewide leadership and coordination for Extension education and outreach programs and applied research in consumer food safety for families, youth, and related food based businesses.
Provide relevant educational opportunities for county-based faculty and staff, including developing methods to document program impacts.
Extend the reach of WSU Extension by integrating distance technology into program delivery through computer applications, web pages, electronic mailings, multimedia technologies, and other emerging technologies.
Acquire both financial and human resources through grants, contracts and gifts to support the development and delivery of consumer food safety programs.
Manage funding sources in accordance with University and funding agency policy.
Build capacity to sustain and grow programs through constituent empowerment and/or leadership development
Develop scholarly publications, fact sheets, and peer-reviewed journal articles in the area of food safety. Disseminate scholarship results and applied research in appropriate professional forums.
Develop collaborative relationships with state agencies and organizations that influence food safety policy.
Provide students with internships, research, and educational opportunities both on campus and throughout the state with Extension offices and agencies, as appropriate.
Seek opportunities to serve on state, regional, and national committees to represent Washington State University.
Participate as an affiliate faculty member in the WSU-UI School of Food Science.
Document program impacts and make timely reports as required.
Engage diverse audiences and communities.
Become knowledgeable about and promote WSU Extension programs.
1. Minimum of an earned Master’s degree, at the time of application, in food science, food safety, or closely related discipline.
2. Strong academic training in consumer food safety.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: (unranked order)
1. A minimum of two years of experience or training in consumer food safety and problem solving as applied to food preparation, preservation, risk management, and other food safety topics.
2. Excellent interpersonal skills and a capacity and willingness to engage diverse constituents in educational programs.
3. Demonstrated ability to conduct programs that address consumer food safety issues.
4. Demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication with a record of peer-reviewed publications.
5. Knowledge and application of emerging issues in consumer food safety.
6. Flexibility in exercising both leadership and team membership roles to work harmoniously, independently, and collaboratively with people.
7. Demonstrated ability to use current computer technology and distance-bridging technologies to expand learning opportunities.
8. Demonstrated success with grants, contracts, and gift development.
9. Demonstrated ability to develop and carry out plans for fee-generating educational activities.
10. Ph.D. in food science, food safety, or a closely related field.
• Evening and weekend work is required.
• Ability to travel year-round using own reliable transportation (mileage reimbursed) is required. The successful candidate must possess a valid driver’s license. While using a private vehicle for official business, current automobile liability insurance must be obtained (meeting the requirements described in RCW 46.30.020, and RCW 46.09.090).
• Extension faculty members are hired into the organization, not into a specific geographical location. It is possible that future circumstances may require relocation.
