SUMMARY:

The job holder will be the recognized sensory expert in the business, provide expert advice to the R&D team and key stakeholders where specific tests are needed, help with interpretation of results & advice on most appropriate way to use test outcomes data to monitor & set targets for performance. They will drive implementation of best practice to maximize validity of results and insights from tests.

The job holder will lead the delivery of the sensory science program and sensory projects for SS & KLIX. They will oversee & lead the program to ensure all milestones are achieved & delivered on time and meet quality, delivery & financial targets.

The job holder will lead the Sensory Science team building capability & developing talent. This will include the recruitment & development of the sensory team & building the governance processes globally. They have the responsibility to manage & advise the sensory technologists and sensory technicians in methodology, performance & best practice.

The job holder will build & maintain relationships with other Mars / Wrigley sites to ensure knowledge transfer in appropriate areas. They will collaboratively develop & evolve methodology to ensure sensory panel testing program is leading and innovative. He / she will liaise with external partners (Universities, CCFRA, and Leatherhead etc.) to bring best practice & innovative methods & insights to Mars Drinks. Leverage sensory science knowledge & networks to build a strong internal sensory science know how.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Consult & advise the wider R&D community, providing support & recommendations for factory testing for NPD, product improvements, continuity of supply, COGS & VGP projects.

Work with the wider Drinks teams to review competitor products & maintain level of understanding within the team.

Lead the development of technical expertise within the R&D department by initiating own activities to plug knowledge gaps & by recommending activities.

Support Global Sensory & Consumer Science Director and peer group through coaching junior members of the team, driving engagement and promoting an innovative and learning culture within the team.

Provide project management leadership on KLIX & Single Serve projects liaising with wider teams, recommending methods, reporting & recommending output.

Design, write & continuously improve internal processes & standard methods for sensory.

To continuously improve own technical expertise, keeping abreast of new sensory methods and statistical methods

To support the overall organization by providing technical expertise as relevant, strongly supporting a drinks culture within Mars Drinks

To lead research projects relating to Multidimensional Sensory Science, Competitor evaluations, Range Reviews and Proficiency Testing

Review and implementation, where appropriate, of new sensory methodology.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Expert knowledge of sensory discrimination and descriptive profiling methods and statistical analysis

Experience of relevant sensory software packages e.g Compusense, Senpac, IQ

Good attention to details with strong analytical and problem solving skills

Action orientated, yet with strong planning and organizational skills

A great team worker with excellent communication and facilitation skills

Good personal sensory skills, especially around tasting

Creative and inquisitive, with enthusiasm and passion for their work

EDUCATION

Degree qualified in Food Science or Food Technology, must include Sensory module, plus 2-3 years of experience

Postgraduate in Sensory Science with 1 years practical sensory experience

Worked in field of Sensory Science preferably for 2-3 years
