Job Description

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a Manufactured Food Specialist within the Food Safety and Security Program. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following: providing regular consultations, advice and technical assistance to home based and small food manufacturing operations and other related client relative to food or dietary supplement related concerns and inquiries; evaluate new business proposals for home based operations to ensure that food processes are safe and will assist these firms with their questions on regulatory requirements; assist in developing and increasing outreach efforts in order to protect public health and educate industry partners; collect information from complainants when foodborne illness is alleged, suspected or confirmed; conduct desk audits of completed inspection reports and compliance and enforcement actions to ensure that they comply with established procedures and policies; assist in ensuring that the Food Safety Program comes into compliance with the Manufactured Food Regulatory Program Standards. This is a restricted position that has been developed as part of a Cooperative Agreement with the Food and Drug Administration and will last until July 31, 2018; however, the cooperative agreement has the potential for continuation.  

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess significant knowledge of food safety practices and principles; knowledge of complex food processing and food handling procedures of food establishments; extensive knowledge of all applicable state and federal laws and regulations related to food protection; proficiency using standard professional computer software applications. Must have the ability to interpret and apply laws and regulations; to compose relevant standard operating procedures, policy guidelines and other documents. The ability to make independent technical decisions; to work both independently and in a team environment; to effectively communicate, both written and orally; to be self-motivated and customer service oriented; and to effectively plan and organize work activities and successfully interact with the food safety staff, the public, the food industry and other regulatory agencies. Must have the ability to make autonomous decisions and to take appropriate actions in diverse circumstances and environments. Must have and maintain a valid driverā??s license and a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway safety.  

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science or a related field. Current or recent experience in a similar regulatory position dealing with food safety and security in a retail or manufacturing environment. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
