Position Title: Sensory and Consumer Scientist

Reports To: Sensory & Consumer Insights Manager

Location: Franklin, TN

Purpose of Role:

The Sensory and Consumer Scientist provides the technical leadership and scientific expertise to effectively design and conduct innovative sensory and consumer test protocols and analyze research data. The resulting recommendations from this analysis are used to support projects that identify opportunities and diminish risks in the product development process, product design changes, and product quality. Significant collaboration is expected with all managers and developers across multiple disciplines within R&D, Marketing Innovation, Consumer Insights, Manufacturing, and Quality teams. A strong knowledge of Sensory Science and Consumer Science in addition to a robust professional network is essential to provide solid actionable recommendations to the business.

 

Principal Accountabilities

         Helps develop and executes state-of-the-art sensory and consumer evaluation methodologies and consumer research to provide insight for development of innovative product and package designs

         Analyzes complex sets of sensory/consumer data to support product design insight

         Trains and leads panel of highly skilled descriptive panelists

         Assesses needs and develops protocols to ensure that descriptive and/or conformance panels maintain appropriate skill levels and calibration

         Helps ensure product quality through monitoring sensory characteristics of all brands at all manufacturing sites

         Collaborates with Consumer Market Insights to provide expertise on sensory evaluation and its link to consumer understanding

         Builds and maintains robust internal and external networks to facilitate early identification of new methodologies and best-in-class Sensory and Consumer research

         Establish strong relationships with cross-functional Product Development and Implementation, Quality & Food Safety, Regulatory and Pet Center teams

         Creation and protection of intellectual property of Mars, Inc.

Qualifications

Key Functional Skills/Knowledge

         Ability to apply multiple sensory evaluation disciplines including Descriptive Analysis and Discrimination Testing

         Demonstrated competency in consumer digging and ability to analyze complex data and conduct relevant statistical analyses to articulate consumer preferences and actionable recommendations for new opportunities and innovations

         Ability to train and lead Descriptive and/or Conformance Panels

         Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and flex between strategic and tactical roles

         Ability to work with a broad range of skills and cross functional disciplines

         Demonstrated passion for and continuously curious about consumer-centered design

Key Experiences

         3+ years in various aspects of sensory evaluation and consumer research

         Participation in sensory and/or consumer research and design symposiums is highly preferred

         1+ years relevant internship is highly preferred if no professional work experience

Desired Education

         M.S. in Food Science, Sensory Science emphasis preferred, and GPA of 3.0 or above

         B.S. in Food Science or Behavioral/Social Science plus 5+ years professional work experience

         Course in Statistics and preferred working knowledge of Quantitative Descriptive Analysis

         Impacts Mars Petcare incremental growth targets through delivery of consumer relevant propositions and business solutions aligned with growth focus areas

         Decides evaluation, analytical and statistical methodologies and recommends products for testing

         Decides and defines the most effective and efficient use of technical resources including panels

         Recommends product, raw material, package and/or process changes/improvements

         Influences external research and partnerships
