Food Safety & Quality Assurance Manager - Novato, CA

 

Position Summary:

The Food Safety & Quality Assurance Manager will develop, organize and execute the company’s comprehensive quality and food safety programs. The manager will also formulate food safety and quality policies and programs and provide guidance and feedback to purchasing, production and warehousing with regard to both food safety and quality issues. These programs will be designed to meet operational plans, without compromising customer expectations and regulatory requirements and expectations.. The position will introduce, monitor and update (as warranted) quality and food safety programs in conjunction with other departments to meet company and regulatory objectives such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and California Department of Public Health (CDPH). This includes, but is not limited to: quality control testing framework, microbiological testing framework, HACCP, food safety and defense procedures, GMP’s, pest management and housekeeping / sanitation practices.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide ongoing guidance, execution and vision to support comprehensive quality and food safety programs for Navitas Naturals; ensuring continuity of business according to internal standards, customer and regulatory expectations.
  • Communicate food safety and quality assurance related information and expectations with customers and other external contacts.
  • Supervise quality control technician(s), when required.
  • Provide for the introduction and daily application of the food safety and quality policies in the plant to satisfy the rules that apply with respect to HACCP and food safety.
  • Ensure the completeness and accuracy of sales orders and a timely coordination with the shipping department for on-time fulfillment.
  • Lead HACCP and Food Safety Teams.
  • Lead organic certification program.
  • Oversee production starts/stops, as well as inventory holds and clearances when quality or food safety related issues arise.
  • Monitor unacceptable and expired inventory and oversee appropriate disposal Determine, in conjunction with other department managers, disposition of such inventory.
  • Monitor performance of quality control systems to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Oversee finished product microbiological program and environmental monitoring program including issue investigation and follow-up.
  • Plan and perform bi-annual mock recalls. Follow-up and resolve any resulting issues.
  • Analyze quality control test results and communicate quality control information to all relevant organizational departments, outside vendors, or contractors.
  • Complete and return customer questionnaires, where applicable.
  • Organize and maintain vendor quality control documents.
  • Direct the tracking of defects, test results, or other regularly reported quality control data.
  • Track and report results of plant pesticide program.
  • Identify critical control points in the manufacturing process and specify sampling and monitoring procedures to be used at these points.
  • Organize and oversee organic and kosher programs.
  • Produce reports regarding non-conformance of products or processes, daily production quality, root cause analyses, or quality trends.
  • Ensure review and update of standard operating procedures and food safety & quality assurance manuals.
  • Support quality and food safety sections in Navitas computer system.
  • Review and food safety documentation necessary for regulatory submissions and inspections.
  • Supervise, host, or conduct internal and external audits. Follow up with action plans.
  • Document, investigate and respond to customer complaints in conjunction with food safety and customer care teams.
  • Any other tasks assigned by Management in order to assist in meeting company objectives
  • Plan and oversee the implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act requirements

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science or Food Technology preferred. Life Science degree or related technical fields may be considered with food experience.
  • Three to five years’ experience in quality assurance and food safety in the food industry is required, preferably in a management position.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture, packaging and distribution of goods.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, and their applications.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Knowledge of FDA and California commercial and regulatory requirements. Able to research other country regulations and interpret the impact on Navitas’ business.
  • Knowledge and experience with regard to the Global Food Safety Initiative
  • Experience/aptitude for implementing business processes is desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills and be comfortable working in a production environment as a hands-on team player who can also operate independently. Must be able to meet communicated schedules and deadlines.
  • Self-confident, collaborative, knowledgeable and an analytic thinker. Must demonstrate good judgment and the ability to take action as appropriate. Ability to handle daily work details accurately as well as other projects, and dive in and learn the business.
  • Strong computer skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Office required; specifically Outlook, Word and Excel. Experience with NetSuite [or other similar ERP systems] desirable.
