Position Summary


The Food Technologists reports directly to the Director of Product Development.  This position makes sure food products are produced safely, legally and are of the quality claimed. This position is involved in developing the manufacturing processes and recipes of food products and may work on existing and newly discovered ingredients to invent new recipes and concepts.  The Food Technologist conducts experiments and produces sample products, as well as designing the processes and machinery for making products with a consistent flavor, color and texture in large quantities.



Duties and Responsibilities




·        Develop new products across multiple product categories and throughout all phases of product development – from initial bench development to launch

·        Formulate food products with exceptionally high standards, but simultaneously consider critical technical issues such as: food safety, food stability/shelf-life, cost, nutrition, scalability, etc.

·        Knowledge of consumer insights and culinary methods and ability to refine product based on feedback

·        Understand culinary principles and be able to apply them to technical development

·        Quickly bring product concepts to life in food form through creation of protocepts and food models

·        Solve complex technical problems related to the development, manufacturing, and/or improvement of food products and processes

·        Anticipate potential development challenges and proactively identify development approaches and contingency plans

·        Develop products within specific nutritional and ingredient guidelines; generate preliminary nutritional and ingredient statements as needed

·        Ability to create an experimental design (as needed) and conduct data analysis and provide interpretation and technical recommendations

·        Conduct basic analytical testing to support product development work

·        Recommend testing at outside test labs and analyze data and draw conclusions from a variety of microbiological, chemical and physical tests

·        Work with Supply Chain to source and select appropriate materials

·        Expertise in a variety of food manufacturing unit operations and demonstrated ability to learn new technologies

·        Ability to troubleshoot technical, formulation and processing issues during plant runs

·        Maintain accurate project information, formulations, and specifications

·        Write finished product specifications and project status reports

·        Write protocols and administer shelf life studies

·        The incumbent understands and complies with all food safety policies, procedures and programs as stated in the Company’s Food Safety Manual.

·        Performs all other duties as assigned.




Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


·        Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects with overlapping deadlines

·        Strong documentation, organization and time management skills

·        Work with a wide variety of customers, internal and external. 

·        Be able to guide a team to support product development, as needed

·        Possess excellent interpersonal and written communication skills

·        Knowledge of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint programs

·        Minimal travel requirements required.



Education and Experience


·        Minimum Education Required:  B.S. or M.S in Food Science or related discipline.  Equivalent work experience would be considered. 

·        Prior food product development experience preferred
