Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Under the direction of Manager, Product Innovation R&D, perform and execute activities (e.g. lab experiments, plant trials, commercialization trials, documentation) that requires technical skills in food science, chemistry, microbiology, food processing and packaging

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

       Design, coordinate and conduct experiments in the lab, processing plant and field environments

       Collect, analyze and interpret data; report findings to Supervisor

       Provide technical assistance to other R&D team members and others as requested

       Adhere to all field and plant quality, GMP and food safety standards

       Act as a liaison for training and guidance throughout the scale-up production trials and commercialization of new products and process developments

       Develop and issue product packaging, graphic, nutritional and product specifications

       Manage product specification systems based in Microsoft Access and other R&D databases such as Genesis SQF R&D Nutritional Software and assure up to date specifications are in distribution

       Maintain laboratory equipment and work area

       Work beyond regular office hours, weekends, rotating shifts required

       Travel up to 10% required

       Other duties as assigned

Required Skills

SKILLS:

       Working knowledge of food technology and processing with emphasis on fresh fruits and vegetables

       Computer skills as related to data entry and analysis

       Exceptional written and oral communication skills; ability to work with a diverse work force

       Occasional travel to regional processing plants for trials

       Occasional flexible work schedule after normal office hours to support plant trials

       Bilingual in English / Spanish a plus

Required Experience

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

       B.S. degree in Food Science or related Biosciences

       M.S. degree in Food Science or related Biosciences a plus; will accept 3 5 years fresh-cut produce experience in lieu of M.S. degree
