General Summary:

This is a technical role within the Campbell Americas R&D Product Data Management (PDM) group leading the product document translation for commercialization of innovation, productivity and quality initiatives, managing critical product formulation information as it is transferred from the kitchen to the manufacturing facility. This position establishes and documents technical standards related to product formulation management for successful scale up and manufacture This position leads multiple aspects of technical documentation in systems such as the Optiva Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system, SAP & SharePoint, working in close collaboration with internal subject matter experts in Product Development, Packaging, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Supply Chain and Nutrition. Projects are of moderate to high complexity and technical risk.

Primary Responsibilities:

Product Formulation Management for Manufacturing:

o    Leadership in the application of food science/technical knowledge to translate Product Development kitchen batch formulations to plant-ready formatted formulations, using a complex set of standards dictated by type of formula (e.g. retort soup, aseptic broth, hot fill beverage) and specific manufacturing location requirements and unitized plant operations.

o    Systematic build of formulas, procedures and specifications in the Optiva Product Lifecycle Management system as required to ensure that products can be manufactured properly and according to specifications and can integrate with SAP & RMS plant floor systems.

o    Work collaboratively as a core member of multiple product commercialization business teams, independently managing all product documentation requirements as needed to meet project timelines.

o    Ensure all technical documentation is bundled to deliver the full manufacturing requirements: formula, procedure, kitchen batch sheet, formula change note, cost and extend SAP requirements, item specifications and packaging requirements.

o    Utilize SAP ERP system to review and confirm manufacturing product formulations to ensure proper data continuity. 

o    Manage the versioning and obsolescence of product documentation in Optiva for multiple product brands to keep plant and R&D systems aligned.

o    Launch and track electronic workflows as required to collect needed cross-functional input or approvals.

o    Work closely with other Technologists on the PDM, Product Development and Commercialization teams to adjust priorities and workload as needed in order to meet commercialization project timeline commitments for the division.

o    Provide periodic and timely communication to Product Development, Supply Chain and the Manufacturing plants on the status of Product Formulation updates.

o    Manage temporary and or emergency product change documentation to product formulations and incorporate them into the product formulations as required.

Business Process Development and Improvement:

o    Drive ownership in identification of Continuous Improvement in the processes for Product Formulation data management collaborating with the broader R&D and Supply Chain teams.  

o    Serve as a subject matter expert on special project teams focused on improving data quality and efficiency.

o    Develop and document new/modified work processes and lead communication and change management /adoption to broader data management team (WHQ & Pepperidge Farm) and internal customers.

o    Develop and maintain documentation/audit trail for internal new formulas and formula change requests.

o    Understand and support established product formulation SharePoint business processes.

o    Leverage system knowledge to organize and streamline different types of technical documentation for enhanced department efficiency.

o    Deep understanding of Optiva business processes and systems for process improvement recommendation and implementation.

 Training, Mentoring Coaching:

o    As a Subject matter expert, mentor new Product Development technologists on Optiva and SAP systems, teaching best practices in the development of formulas, procedures & specifications.

o    Communicate closely with Packaging, Product Development, Supply Chain, Regulatory Affairs and Marketing to maintain up-to-date project information and priorities.

o    Conduct training to external teams as required on new and existing business processes (e.g. formula submission, label information requests, temporary notes, discrepancy reporting).

o    Train Product Development technologists/ engineers on product formulation templates and standards to ensure accurate transfer of knowledge for consistent product manufacture. 

o    Provide additional training as needed to user groups to enhance proficiency.

Technical Analysis & Quality Standards:

o    Research, review and interpret product formulation & plant manufacturing practices to set standards for various food product types setting the stage for all new formulas to be developed using these standards.

o    Work collaboratively with Product Development & Supply Chain to ensure accuracy of new product formulas and updates to existing product formulations.

Job Complexity:

o    Must possess a strong technical knowledge base of food principles from lab to plant scale-up and be able to apply that knowledge to formulations, manufacturing and finished product specifications.

o    Knowledge of commercial food manufacturing systems, equipment and thermal processes.

o    Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills, along with strong collaboration skills.

o    Demonstrated analytical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills.

o    Proficient at independent planning and prioritization.

o    Strong computer skills including fluency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel), and database management.  Proficient or ability to quickly become proficient in all relevant software systems/applications such as Optiva PLM, SAP and SharePoint.

Minimum Requirements:

o    Bachelor of Science required; discipline in Food Science preferred.

o    Minimum of 1 to 3 years of relevant experience required.

o    Optiva or other PLM / product data management system experience preferred.

Working Conditions:

o    Normal corporate office environment

o    Less than 5% travel
