Position Description

The R&D Internship will provide an opportunity for a Senior student to use their educational training, in conjunction with a “hands on” experience in cheese processing at Great Lakes Cheese, to build their skill sets in R&D and Formulations. The length of the internship will be developed to accommodate the student’s availability during his/her summer break and is anticipated to be a 10-12 week program. The internship will be conducted at Great Lakes Cheese’s La Crosse, WI plant and will require the student to be located within reasonable commuting distance.

Responsibilities

  Assist with creation and testing of process cheese formulations.

  Group sheet and formula audits.

  Test & Analyze control and finished product samples.

  Compare control samples to finished product samples.

  Work with the Formulations Manager on sample maintenance and coordinate testing procedures to assure proper testing to meet customer quality expectations.

  Organize the sample cooler based upon project status.

  Run pilot plant equipment.

  Maintain record of all experiments.

  All GLC employees are expected to perform any assignment or job task according to the stated safety policies and procedures.

  All GLC employees are expected to produce and promote our products and services in a manner that exceeds the quality and value expectation of our customers and consumers by adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices, Policies and Procedures outlined in our Safe Quality Food Program.

  Other responsibilities as assigned by the manager.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

  Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Food Science or related field.

  Senior status.

  Basic understanding of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel and Word.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills

  SAP experience.

  pH meter and CEM microwave experience.

  Mechanical aptitude.

Working Conditions

  Repetitive work in a fast-paced production environment with average temperature of 55-75 degrees F.

  Hair nets, ear plugs/muffs, hardhats, cut proof gloves and/or safety glasses may be required.

  Ability to frequently handle material from floor-to-waist, waist-to-shoulder, shoulder-to-overhead and pushing/pulling/carrying.

  Ability to constantly stand/walk; bend/flex/extend/twist neck and back; frequently grip/reach/lift/pull with L/R hands.

  Product weight: up to 50 lbs.
