Director of Food Safety & Compliance Reporting To: Executive Vice President 
FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary ("Paid to..."): 
Drives Company Mission, Vision, Values. Responsible for the activities involved in assuring the quality of all products produced meet company service, quality, cost, safety and people objectives. This includes development, implementation and monitoring of programs for: 

  • HACCP, Organic Certified, FISMA, UEP, FDA, USDA, SQF
  • Safe Quality Foods
  • Tracking ingredient and product (Traceability – Lot Tracking)
  • Supplier certifications
  • Managing process control and adherence to specifications
  • Managing environmental controls.
  • Labeling products and shipping finished goods.

Key Duties & Responsibilities (Includes the following. Other duties may apply or be assigned.): 

  • Manages all Quality Control processes at all processing facilities.
  • Develops and implemented programs to ensure compliance with GMP’s by all employees and other personnel in the processing facilities.
  • Orchestrates the administration of biological monitoring procedures to determine the efficacy of sanitation methods.
  • Monitors employee practices to aid in a pest-free environment.
  • Develops and implements new methods, procedures, and systems to improve quality performance.
  • Supervises operation to comply with all applicable safety laws and regulation, as well as Company food safety policies, procedures and standards.
  • Develops and maintains training and development programs that support key performance goals for the Company, as well as provide a satisfying and rewarding work environment for employees.
  • Manages operations to maintain a SUPERIOR ratings in all company audits.
  • Educates and trains employees as to their impact in the quality management system.
  • Develops, implements, manages and integrates a Quality Management System (QMS) for all locations.
  • Serves as the primary quality control resource for problem identification, resolution, loss reporting and continuous improvement.
  • Manages quality control personnel on a day-to-day basis.
  • Supports concurrent engineering efforts by participating in design development projects representing particularly involving potential food safety risks.
  • Designs, implements and documents procedures for process control, process improvement, testing and inspection.
  • Establishes and implements metrics (process capability, control charts, measurement quality) for monitoring system effectiveness and to enable managers to make sound product quality decisions.
  • Performs root-cause analysis and other problem solving activities to identify effective corrective actions and process improvements.
  • Establishes collection and analysis systems of statistical data to predict trends that will affect improvement of product quality.
  • Analyzes customers’ product specifications to establish efficient, cost-effective requirements for ease of manufacture and reproducibility.
  • Develops process certification standards and assist in process certification.
  • Monitors vendor performance and establish criteria and rating system for critical vendors.
  • Reviews customer purchase orders, contracts and change requests and ensure that the necessary criteria and provisions are included in quality and process plans. Also, reviews suppliers purchase orders and establish supplier quality requirements.
  • Interacts with customers to identify opportunities to improve quality and establish feedback with manufacturing and development personnel. Develops and maintains customer complaint logs as well as tracking customer complaint metrics.
  • Oversees calibration and testing programs.
  • Reports to management on quality issues, trends and losses.
  • Leads in internal and external quality audits as well as investigations involving live bird production, Feed Mill operations and Egg Processing.
  • All other reasonable duties, as assigned.

Job Requirements : 

  • Minimum of seven years of experience in related field and/or leadership capacity
  • BS degree with a scientific concentration
  • Basic Technical Writing Skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Knowledge of basic micro techniques (aseptic sampling, dilutions, plating).
  • Ability to read and interpret micro results.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Basic computer knowledge (Access, Excel and Word).
  • SQF compliant

Qualifications :

Education and/or Experience : 
Engineering, Production, QA/Food Safety experience (7+) years. 

Language Skills: 
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. 

Mathematical Skills: 
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. 

Reasoning Ability: 
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. 

Computer Skills: 
Must have basic computer skills. MS Office a must

Other Skills and Abilities : 

  • Must be able to work on an on-call basis and be able to work beyond normal working hours.
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
