R & D Technologist
East West Tea Company - "Yogi Tea" - Eugene, OR




The Food Technologist position is an entry level Research and Development position supporting Product Development and R&D functions throughout the business. Responsibilities include bench level product development, conducting shelf life and sensory evaluations, assisting in plant trials, and other product development tasks. The position will also work with Quality to create and maintain product specifications and documentation as needed. Attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong organizational abilities are required. This is an hourly, non-exempt position.

Job Duties :
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform bench level product development work on new and existing products directed by the R&D Manager and independently.
  • Plan, organize, and execute sensory evaluation testing of new and existing products, shelf life, second sourcing, and consumer use tests.
  • Document observed results, analyze data, draw conclusions and make recommendations during product development activities.
  • Support all technical development activities to scale up for commercialization, product launch, and post launch monitoring.
  • Supports Customer Care, Customer Service, Marketing and Shipping by providing product technical information as requested.
  • Update and maintain product formulation, ingredient specification, organic certification, and nutrition databases.
  • Understand the herbal and medicinal functions of our raw materials and our finished products. Actively learns about new herbal and nutritional sources of health and wellbeing.
  • Understand Yogi’s values and consumer needs.

Required Competencies & Knowledge:

  • Yogi seeks to hire a candidate with 1-4 years’ experience in the food industry.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Food Science or Technology is required.
  • An understanding of organic regulations is preferred.
  • The ideal candidate should have good laboratory experience and be familiar with GMP’s.
  • Candidate should also have strong organizational skills and be able to prioritize and plan work activities efficiently.
  • Strong math, computer, basic scientific, statistical and analytical skills are required.
  • Must be very detailed oriented in observations and documentation.

Ability to:

  • Work in a rapidly evolving environment with flexibility and focus
  • Prioritize effectively to meet targets
  • Ensure collaborative relationships with customers, vendors, and all levels of organization

Proficiency in: MS Office Suite

Work Environment:

  • Work is done primarily in a laboratory and/or office setting.
  • Regular exposure to botanicals
  • Springfield, Oregon

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting at a work station for extended periods of time
  • Stand, walk, climb stairs on a frequent basis
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds on an infrequent basis.

Required experience:

  • 1-4 years in food industry: 4 years
