Mars Drinks continues to grow and develop providing “great tasting moments” in the world’s workplaces. Coffee is a vital component of this objective and this role leads the technical development of our single-serve coffees based on a real understanding of what consumers want, what is happening in the coffee supply chain and how blending and roasting contributes to a great hot drinks experience.

The Coffee Scientist leads the Global Coffee Development Program to develop and launch great coffees meeting the consumer expectations in global markets. In partnership with the Global Coffee buyer, this role will ensure the continuity of supply for the current product range, optimizing the specification to drive the right quality/value balance.

The role also offers insights, knowledge and technical support to the Drinks Academy initiative that aims to embed technical drinks knowledge in the business – for both internal purposes and to support the customer network.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

·         Develop and execute the Technical Coffee Development Program for Mars Drinks. Ensuring translation of key attributes through the manufacturing process and through the vending system to the cup

·         Support the roasting operation at WCR as required to improve yields, quality and operational effectiveness

·         Partner with the Global Coffee buyer to ensure the right quality/value balance for the coffee supply chain- ensuring specifications for green coffee and finished products are in place and aligned with the purchasing strategy

·         Facilitate close partnerships with Sales and Central & Local Marketing to gain an in-depth understanding of how customers & consumers use our products demonstrating a clear Consumer & Market Understanding.

·         Contributes possibilities with Marketing based on technical reality to develop and execute an ‘insights driven’ Product Development Program

·         Utilizes above behaviours in contributing to Innovation and corporate reputation in building brand credentials for coffee

·         Identifies & explores strategic options using insights and coffee culture to develop concepts for future brand identity

·         Create a strong network within the coffee industry building links with the NCA, SCAA, ASIC, certification bodies, trade partners and others to elevate Mars Drinks’ position within the industry

·         Support and lead projects as appropriate within the supply chain (including at origin) to further business understanding of the coffee supply chain, deliver sustainability objectives and derive additional business benefit

Qualifications

KEY FUNCTIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:

·         Strong coffee knowledge and experience of developing coffee blends and finished products

·         Green bean selection, assessment, blending and roasting

·         Knowledge of grinding and extraction technologies and impact on the cup

·         Experience of ethical and sustainable product development

·         Excellent written and oral presentation skills

·         Strong influencing and project management skills

·         Excellent organizational and time management skills

·         Connections within appropriate trade groups, industry organizations, suppliers, origin locations, and influencers within industry

·         Understanding of economic, financial, and general business concepts

·         Ability to travel (estimated at 25%) including Europe, the Far East and coffee growing regions

DESIRED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Bachelor’s / Advanced Degree in Food Science, Applied Biology, Chemistry, Chemical or Food Engineering

·         Relevant and extensive experience in Coffee Industrydemonstrating applied science, e.g., application of advanced scientific and chemical understanding to product / process development

·         Ability to converse in Spanish will be advantageous
