Job Description:

 

THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE USED TO FILL TWO (2) FOOD INSPECTION SUPERVISOR VACANCIES.

The positions are part of the the Food & Feed Safety Division, Manufactured Food Safety Program. NOTE: The locations of the positions are yet to be determined as each position will be based out of the incumbent's home office and will cover a designated region/territory in Minnesota.

The positions exist to effectively direct, supervise and train inspection personnel in the enforcement of state and federal laws and rules adopted by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture in order to promote uniform and effective inspections and investigations of all food manufacturers and wholesale food handlers within the State. Additional responsibilities include working with inspection staff and food facilities on advanced issues such as investigations, compliance, juice and seafood HACCP, specialized processing, acidified foods, low acid canned foods, and bottled water.

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Bachelor's degree in biological, physical, food science, nutrition, public or environmental health or related degree PLUS three (3) years of experience conducting advanced-level food safety work

OR

Five (5) years of advanced-level experience working in food regulatory programs or related experience.

Must currently possess and maintain an active/valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record subject to review.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
-Applicable state laws and regulations relating to food and food safety.
-Food processing and handling procedures of individual food handlers and establishments.

SKILL IN:
-Effectively supervising people, training them and maintaining uniformity in inspections.
-Working with a broad spectrum of consumers, industry and academia.
-Making decisions rapidly on sanitation problems, improper facilities and equipment, and improper food handling technique.
-Interpreting complex laws, rules and regulations.
-Computer applications and programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail, internet and PowerPoint sufficient to communicate with program personnel, locate and retrieve documentation from the web, collect and analyze data, write educational materials and presentations, and format, review and edit documents.

ABILITY TO:
-Recognize unacceptable sanitation, facilities, food handling procedures, fraud, false advertising, unsound practices, unwholesome foods, and employee practices.
-Interact with staff, licensee, and the public in a professional manner.
-Write legible, concise reports on assigned projects.
-Communicate in a clear, concise, accurate, and effective manner to a wide range of audiences such as external clientele, industry, citizens of the state, regulated businesses, etc.
-Evaluate trends and provide recommendations to division management on food inspection and enforcement activities.
-Effectively organize work load and determine priorities sufficient to track program activities and assign work to program staff.
-Pay close attention to detail.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
May occasionally conduct investigations and inspections in the field. The work will require the:
-Ability to travel and maintain a stationary position for long periods of time.
-Ability to ascend and descend ladders and steps.
-Ability to move a variety of dairy, meat and/or food products during investigation and inspection work.
-Ability to traverse a variety of ground conditions such as uneven or slippery surfaces in a variety of wet, hot and cold environments.
-Ability to move/transport up to 40 pounds.
-Ability to detect shades of product color in order to make appropriate product acceptability decisions.
-Ability to communicate and share information in sometimes loud environments.
-Ability to detect odors in order to make product abnormality decisions.

Preferred Qualifications:

 

-Master's degree or higher in a biological, physical or food science, public health, veterinary medicine, or a closely related degree.
-Supervisory or lead work experience.
-Knowledge of dairy, food, and meat processing, handling, storage, sales, transportation and sanitation principles.
-Knowledge of foodborne illness investigation and response procedures.
