Food Technologist II

This role affords the opportunity to work strategically with cross functional partners including from highest level of leadership to production floor thus the right candidate will see the impact of their contribution first hand.

Work with the new product development team to develop new, innovative pizza, & sandwich products.  Partner with quality assurance, sales, engineering, operations and purchasing to establish ingredients, technical information, formulations and operations/manufacturing requirements to produce new products.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • High functioning, creative, collaborative project leadership.
  • Independent development of bench-top product prototypes based on criteria provided by customer, sales and Director R&D; work with sales team through initial steps of Stage Gate process to initiate, complete and revise product prototypes. Prepare for customer facing product presentations and internal cuttings as needed.
  • Collaborative development of internally driven innovation. Bringing ideas to the team, working with internal resources to create and present ideas to leadership
  • Follow-through on sample refinements based on sales, marketing and customer feedback.
  • Critical timeline development, understanding critical path and go/ no-go approvals.
  • Determine ingredient needs ,source raw materials for bench-top samples and initial plant runs; Including base line pricing and specifications
  • Oversee initial production runs of new products and testing runs. Function as Project Manager for launch (including but not limited to BOM and process sheet set up, launch meetings, launch guidance until open items are resolved).
  • Research ingredients cost, manufacturing cost and quality issues to insure prototype products have a high probability to meet criteria upon scale-up.
  • Work with R&D, QA, production and purchasing to ensure all information is received, understood and within the parameters of company and regulatory specifications.
  • Document and track product development progress consistently and accurately, openly sharing information with and explaining information to internal customers and partners.
  • Understand ingredients cost against target finished good cost.
  • Understand manufacturability of ingredient selection and potential associated costs such as waste, impact on run rate or new equipment.
  • Situational leadership including piers, operations crew, interns and others where reporting structure may not be there but leadership is needed.

 SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Technology or related area.
  • Minimum 5 years in food product development
  • Prior experience with product formulation required, dough based development experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of current food industry trends including food and packaging processing methods and techniques.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other software specific to function.
  • Ability to effectively use typical lab and kitchen equipment.
  • Appreciation for and demonstration of the scientific method in work conducted.
