Description

Reporting to the director of R&D and QA, the R&D Scientist will work in the areas of product/ingredient formulations and scale up, new product/ingredients research, test methods development, development and execution of shelf life studies for freshness/food safety and specifications development. The R&D Scientist will collaborate with cross-functional teams, key suppliers and consultants and will be the subject matter expert in the development and reformulation of products and ingredients. This is a full time, salaried position.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead formulation of products and ingredients from concept to production.
  • Communicate with internal and external customers.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design operationally simple and effective products/ingredients for all business channels.
  • Manage product development work with suppliers and/or external resources.
  • Lead manufacturing trials and scale ups at pilot plants or production facilities.
  • Work with cross functional teams to provide technical R&D expertise and leadership in development/reformulations of products and ingredients.
  • Establish key technical performance measures to ensure progress against agreed deliverables and timelines.
  • Research, identify and share knowledge of emerging technologies, products and ingredients as needed.
  • Anticipate product development challenges and propose alternative solutions to ensure best possible outcome.
  • Design, organize, and conduct sensory evaluations of existing and new products/ingredients.
  • Evaluate products and ingredients from a functional and sensory perspective to assess suitability and quality for Peet’s.
  • Explore and design research methodologies and/or tests for specific products to test viability and performance for Peet’s operations.
  • Conduct testing in house or with suppliers/consultants to drive the product development process.
  • Organize and manage external testing programs.
  • Report on test results and communicate recommendations to cross-functional teams.
  • Supervise employees as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A science degree in microbiology, food sciences, food engineering or related fields.
  • Product development experience in food or beverage company.
  • Trained in sensory evaluation of food and beverages.
  • Test development and execution for food or beverage company.
  • Knowledge of food technology, food microbiology, and food manufacturing.
  • Experience in product safety risk assessment and HACCP.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality as needed.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and able to handle multiple projects at the same time.
  • Computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office and able to master other software.
