Essential Job Duties

As it pertains to Extension, Engagement and Outreach, the successful candidate will provide leadership to Extension nutrition education efforts for diet-related chronic disease prevention for diverse audiences, through the following activities:

  • Assess statewide nutritional needs.
  • Assess statewide needs and capacity for programming.
  • Develop and evaluate strategies and programs targeted to these needs.
  • Train agents and other professionals in nutrition concepts and program delivery.
  • Provide technical assistance for nutrition issues.
  • Develop partnerships inside and outside of NC State University.

Specifically, this position will provide programmatic expertise for the intersection of food, nutrition, and health. This includes the area of food, nutrients in food, and food preparation. The successful applicant will train agents and develop programs in the area of food, nutrition, and chronic disease risk reduction related to healthy eating and physical activity. This faculty member will develop and evaluate new delivery strategies that use technology to reach a broader audience with research-based information. This position will also serve as lead for the SNAP-Ed contract with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This contract has grown to over $1.6M with the potential for additional growth. This person will oversee the writing of the yearly contract, lead the grant-funded SNAP-Ed team, and develop new and innovative strategies to reach limited resource families with healthy eating messages.

As it pertains to Research, the successful candidate will have an active scholarship agenda, contributing to the body of nutrition education knowledge through the following activities:

  • Conduct applied research in the field of nutrition education.
  • Focus on identifying the needs and developing and evaluating diet, nutrition, and health (prevention of diet-related chronic disease) educational programming for all residents of North Carolina.
  • Achieve progress in enhancing the field of nutrition education for adults and families by augmenting the arts of teaching and learning to bring about changes in knowledge, attitude, skills, and/or behavior.
  • Disseminate study findings and program results through publishing and presenting at professional conferences.

Specifically, the successful candidate will develop an independent research agenda that seeks to understand best practices for delivering information on food, nutrition, and wellness to consumers using technology and social media with emphasis on reaching limited resource audiences. Research of delivery strategies for health messages with a high level of rigor would create evidence-based models that could be used across the country. Of particular interest will be research projects that examine the use of social marketing to deliver health messages. The socioecological approach to wellness may also be a research area for this individual, seeking to examine best practices for implementation of systems and environmental change related to nutrition, health, and wellness.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The position will also make contributions to the welfare of the department, college, university, or profession including serving on appropriate committees, coalitions, and task forces. Collaborate within and across departments, colleges, universities and other entities through funded projects, consultation, edit and review of documents and grant proposals, and give leadership, when appropriate. In addition, the faculty member will:

  • Teach and mentor graduate students.
  • Serve on graduate committees, as appropriate.
  • Serve as a member of the graduate faculty.
  • Secure grants, contracts, and other funding to support research and extension programming.

Minimum Education/Experience

Minimum experience and education: Ph.D in nutrition or related field. Experience coordinating and managing multi-site, longitudinal research and extension projects required.

Departmental Required Skills

  • Doctorate in nutrition or related field.
  • Research experience in nutrition education.
  • Proven ability to plan, organize, implement and evaluate effective nutrition education, public health and/or extension programs.
  • Demonstrated scholarship in nutrition as indicated by grants, publications, and/or presentations.
  • Grant writing experience.
  • Knowledge and skills in the use of information technologies for communication and dissemination of educational information and programming.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Past experience working in the area of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) and/or Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP).
  • Registered Dietitian, RD preferred.
  • Knowledge of the land grant system and/or Cooperative Extension.
