GENERAL JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible to carry out the
investigations, experimental design, formulation testing, decision making
and commercialization of new product, product renovation and product
maintenance projects. In collaboration with cross functional team and under
the direction of R&D Manager, the R&D Scientist is responsible to
manage project deliverables to contribute to achieving short and long term
departmental and company objectives. This position will work closely with
cross-functional partners in Marketing, Consumer Insights and Sales to
carry out product design and development work leading to products that
deliver on consumer and customer needs. The position works
collaboratively with manufacturing, Quality and Supply chain functions to
assure products consistently deliver on product design.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Direct the coordinated
development of new products and improvements of current products to
deliver on objectives of the annual business plans. Apply sound
culinary and scientific techniques to design products with
consumer/customer valued attributes.
- Lead multiple development
projects using detailed investigations, well thought out experimental
design, sound scientific techniques and data based decision making.
- Investigate for product and
process challenges; provide creative solutions to solve challenges in
development and commercialization.
- Work with other departments
(Manufacturing, Engineering, Maintenance, Quality and Purchasing) to
determine equipment, materials and processes necessary to produce
products to maximize capacity and optimize product quality and
- Insure accurate product
information input to Cost Accounting to maintain the integrity of data
entered into manufacturing management systems.
- Assure technically sound
sensory panels are conducted for product development, shelf-life studies,
improving/maintaining present products and competitive testing.
- Identify and complete
technical study of ingredients, suppliers, co-packers relevant to
meeting project objectives and meeting AdvancePierre
Productivity and Cost Management
- Develop an understanding of
standard product cost models and raw material impact to cost of goods.
Design products to achieve targeted costing; netting defined margins
and sales prices.
- Complete cost savings
projects. Work with Team to calculate total savings.
- Provide support to Senior
Team members to carry out detailed investigations to advise the
Operations in regard to product formulation and yields.
- Support management of
departmental expenses by processing expenses according to company
Innovation and Idea Generation
- Keep current on new
ingredients, processes and equipment through trade journals,
professional meetings, food shows and meetings with technical
- In collaboration with
Insights and Innovation work, contribute new product concepts for
- Know current USDA, FDA, FNS
regulations as they relate to the food processing industry.
- Establish knowledgeable
contacts with expertise in USDA, FDA and FNS regulations. Develop
products and processes with a defined HACCP program.
- Understand the needs of the
customer and their specific market segments.
- Participate in key customer

with Sales Associates and Customers to provide appropriate product
information; network with sales and broker representatives to
understand issues and opportunities.
- Conduct technical areas of
study to develop technical expertise.

data for presentations to senior leadership, customers and/or

Establish and Maintain Critical Business

co-packers and ingredient suppliers.
- Communicate frequently with
industry contacts to stay abreast of technical and market
- Bachelorís degree required,
advanced degree preferred, in Food Science, Meat Science or an
equivalent science program and with 2 years of experience in research
and development or 3-5 years in other technical areas of food
- Proven success working in a
- Technical knowledge with good
reasoning and sound judgment abilities.
- Mature, enthusiastic,
motivated team member.
- Effective written and oral
communication skills. Must be PC literate; able to support development
of effective processes and systems to manage departmental objectives.
- Excellent work ethic with

- Able to work in office,
laboratory, manufacturing environments. Must be able to work flexible
hours as needed based on production scheduling needs. Occasional
