Best known for Little Debbie® snack cakes, America’s leading snack cake brand, Sunbelt Bakery® granola products, and Drake’s Cakes®, McKee Foods Corporation is seeking a Food Scientist and Lead Senior Food Scientist to join our Product Development Team.  With a solid understanding of the food development process, the individual in this position will assist with and/or lead in the development of new products, provide technical assistance for various stages of product development and troubleshoot processes and ingredients to improve quality and cost-savings.

Pay grade: Salaried grades 2 - 5 or above, depending on qualifications

Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (other hours as required by business needs)

Job Summary

This is an exciting Food Science opportunity to work within a leading food manufacturer that that is committed to providing consumers with quality products at an excellent value.  McKee Foods is a privately held, family owned company with a 50+ year history of innovation and treating employees with respect, and a deeply held belief in the importance of doing business with integrity. Responsibilities will include:

·       Create new products from conceptualization through commercialization and reformulate existing products as necessary

·       Interact and communicate effectively with multiple departments

·       Serve on project teams to provide technical expertise related to product design needs

·       Conduct scientific research, focusing on ingredients and food systems and their applications in new products and existing products

·       Make formula changes for product improvement, process improvement, cost initiatives, waste reductions, and internal and external customer requests, including requests for health claims or other nutritional claims

·       Evaluate new ingredients and work with Technical Services to create appropriate specifications for new ingredients

·       Reformulate existing formulas due to supply chain interruptions, working within the ingredient statement and Kosher requirements in order to use existing packaging

·       Set product design and manufacturing specifications, including those for intermediate products

·       Stay current in Food Science trends, the competitive environment of our products, and the food processing marketplace

·       Interact and communicate effectively within the organization

·       Lead a small team which will include other Food Scientist(s) and Product Development Technicians to accomplish departmental objectives and be responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of this unit

Required Qualifications

·       Experience leading and assisting with the development of new products

·       Understanding of the product development process, including stage-gate methods

·       Ability to plan, organize and follow-through on creative and technical tasks

·       High level of initiative, assertiveness and self-direction

·       Strong problem-solving, trouble-shooting and analytical skills

·       Strong interpersonal and communication skills

·       Ability to excel in independently and in a project team environment

·       Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Suite

·       Willing to travel to branch plants for extended time periods as required

Food Scientist:

·       B.S. degree in Food Science or related technical discipline

·       Experience prioritizing multiple projects

Lead Senior Food Scientist:

·       M.S. in Food Science or a related discipline or MBA with B.S. in Food Science or related discipline

·       Eight (8) years of experience in a related position

Preferred Qualifications

·       Familiarity with bakery processes and equipment (mixing, depositing, ovens, proofers, fryers, etc.)

·       Familiarity with lab equipment and procedures

·       Experience with formulations and ingredients for baked and fried goods

·       Training and experience in the design of experiments and/or LEAN Manufacturing

Food Scientist:

·       M.S degree in Food Science or related technical discipline 

·       Three (3) plus years of experience in quality management or product development

Lead Senior Food Scientist:

·       Prior management or leadership experience

·       Ability to lead and cast a vision for one or more product brands

·       Strong ability to lead and prioritize multiple projects

·       Experience developing new processes to support new products, improve existing products or implement cost-savings
