Product Development




The FoodTechnologist I works under close supervision, and as part of the Product Development Team within a larger multi-disciplinary group. They will handles projects for matching blends, formulating new blends, and conducting analytical and sensory test evaluations to meet the requirements of existing and prospective customers for Coffee (dry), Tea (dry) and Allied finished products.


Job Functions:

         Develop new products, and modify current products to meet customer expectations

        Cultivate Project Management skills to set goals, keep time-lines and achieve successful outcome

        Assist with technical consultation and support to Sales and Marketing teams while working to fine tune skills in this area

        Cross-functional interface with QA, Global Sourcing, Operations, and Beverage Equipment to ensure support for finished products

        Continuing education and training to advance skills and product knowledge

        Additional tasks outside "core" responsibilities

Additional Responsibilities


New product bench formulation (e.g. creating coffee blend matches, new tea and/or flavored tea/botanical items)

        Handles the day-to-day requests for custom samples; preparing, labeling, documentation, packing and shipping

        Develops and maintains cupping skills in coffee by frequently participating in internal Commodities and Quality Assurance cuppings

        Perform competitive analysis and set up possible matching samples for group analysis

        Product evaluation (e.g. flavor profiling, sensory panels, shelf-life studies)

        Improve existing products by optimizing key attributes

        Consolidate and recommend new flavors for roast & ground coffee

        Create Product Specifications and Nutritional Data Sheets

        Enter recipes (Bill of Materials - BOM) into computer system

        Roasting skills -- bench top roasting, as well as G60 small production roaster

        Optimize ingredient/formula cost

        Leverage existing raw material suppliers, as well as new suppliers when deemed necessary

        Work on a team to rationalize Finished Product SKU's

        Trouble-shoot and lead root cause analysis on "low-moderate level" customer complaints


        4 year degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Engineering, Culinary or related field and/or related experience in the Beverage and/or Food Industry.

        Minimum of 2 years of Product Development work related experience.

        Knowledge of and experience with coffee and tea is a plus.

        Strong sensory skills and some knowledge of sensory evaluation techniques.

        Ability to interact with technical and sales personnel from flavor industry and make recommendations regarding raw materials for ingredients and commercialized products.

        Experience/and or knowledge with nutritional data generation and regulatory requirements from USDA and FDA as well as State and local health and food safety code.

        Knowledge of SQF quality systems and related requirements.

        Experience with product development, production trials, and/or test conversion to full production.

        Must be extremely detail-oriented and methodical with the flexibility and self-motivation to take on new projects assigned.

        Experience running and maintaining laboratory instrumentation.

        Strong analytical skills and attention to detail with a slant for the creative.

        Possesses excellent record keeping, math, filing and organizational skills. Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages and draw and interpret bar graphs.

        Must have excellent PC computer skills and ability to manage data electronically.

        Must be able to read and comprehend written and verbal instructions, draft memos and ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

        Good organizational skills. Motivated, outgoing, self-starter; able to follow through on duties and assignments with minimal supervision.

        Possesses some practical Project Management skills.

        Excellent time management skills, the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.

        Must be self-motivated, hard working, reliable and accurate, well organized and able to produce quality lab work at high work load.

        Capability in presentation skills and ability to translate technical information to non-technical individuals.

        Must be willing to travel when needed.
