Job Description

The Division of Public Health Inspections of the Department of Environmental Health has an opening for an Environmental Public Health Investigator I - Food Safety.

This position will support or conduct public health or environmental/public health inspections and investigations of regulated commercial food service and commercial marijuana facilities to ensure compliance with environmental/public health regulations and laws.   Entry level and experienced candidates are encouraged to apply.

The mission of the Public Health Inspections Division is to protect the health of consumers in Denver by ensuring that food service establishments, swimming pools, child care facilities and residential health and housing, are in compliance with the respective laws while providing public education to consumers and technical assistance to businesses.

As part of the Department of Environmental Health, the division of Public Health Inspections Division is committed to directing our efforts toward resolving situations posing the greatest risk to the public health. The division seeks to render a high level of customer responsiveness and engage in an aggressive industry partnership and training effort in addition to regular inspections and assessments.

Job Responsibilities

        Conducts on-site facility inspections and investigations or analysis of environmental/public health issues and learns the procedures and rationale to recommend corrective, enforcement or environmental/public health management action. Reinvestigates and re-inspects facilities based on established policies.

        Provide routine technical assistance, education and training about environmental/public health stewardship and compliance to maintain public health and environmental/public health.

        Distribute information to the public, affected industries/businesses and other governmental agencies.

        Prepare or review applications and verify information submitted for licenses and permits to assure applicable standards are met.

        Collect field samples, environmental/public health related data or information as necessary for laboratory or trend analysis.

        Monitor compliance with applicable rules and regulations. 

Qualifications

Education Requirement:
Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Hospitality Management, Food Safety, Nutrition, or a directly related field.


Experience Requirement: 

None. 

 

Education Equivalency:

A combination of the appropriate type and level of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience qualifications.


Licensure and/or Certification: 

Possession of a valid Colorado Class "R" Driver's license at the time of application.

NOTES:
 

1.    Investigators work a flexible schedule that could change weekly. Shift scheduling could require working late some nights and working during some weekends.

2.    Investigators inspect regulated facilities across the City, so this position requires use of the employee's personal vehicle. Mileage traveled for the purpose of agency business is reimbursed.

Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate the following at the time of hire: 
   

          a valid Colorado Class "R" Driver's License;

          recent proof of a clean driving record (MVR); and 

          proof of valid car insurance.
