R&D Application Associate

This role reports to the R&D Manager and the ability to work independently, be familiarity with lab techniques and formulations/flavoring is essential. This position will also coordinate with Sales, Product Development and Purchasing.


  • Supports handling of review process, testing and acceptance of all new raw materials based on Certificate of Analysis (CofA) matching, appearance and taste.
  • Assists with the evaluation of production samples and suggests solutions if problems arise with samples/products.
  • Coordinates with purchasing to approve raw materials for new products and replacement of existing products.
  • Coordinates with the formulations and sales departments to assist in development and flavor new products for powders, tablets and capsules.
  • Conducts bulk density testing, moisture, mesh size and other lab tests relating to the creation of finished product specifications.
  • Assists with powder product pilots, tablet pilots and/or capsule pilots
  • Assists with all fill tests for powder end products, i.e. Bottle, Packets and Scoops.
  • Assists with flavor systems in formulas as necessary and provides Product Development with all information on any new materials that need to be added to the formula and set up in DBA.
  • Assists with Finished Product Specifications sheets for each new product and then passes on to Quality department to finalize.
  • Reviews stability after test results are received on finished products and works along with Product Development to prolong shelf life if needed.
  • Follows GLP and uses the designated lab book for continuous recording of every type of test or data in regards to raw materials and/or finished products.
  • Updates documents consistently such as: the priority excel sheet on the share drive, tracking all raw materials from R&D Applications department ensuring that they follow the New Raw Material Qualification process.
  • This position is required to wear common protective and/or safety gear
  • This position is exposed to small particles, odors and allergens.


  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in related field or equivalent
  • 5+ years related experience or equivalent; experience in food/nutrition needed
  • Experience with laboratory environment, equipment and safety procedures
  • Flavoring and formulations experience a plus
  • Ability to develop clear, concise, and timely oral and written reports
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage priorities and workflows
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm
  • Working knowledge of statistical analysis of data, laboratory instrumentation and troubleshooting, and laboratory analysis
  • Acute attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of various teams and committees
  • Proficient on Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and MRP Software, preferably DBA Manufacturing
  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements
  • Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace
  • Bilingual skills a plus.
