Job Description
Position: R&D Director – ABQ
FLSA Exemption: Exempt/Salaried
Salary: DOE

R&D Director Job Responsibilities: The R&D Director is a “hands on” research and development position responsible for directing and implementing the organization's research and development policies, objectives, and initiatives while leading efforts to produce new products and manage costs.
Essential Qualifications:

  • Develops new products, new processes and specifications for all products.
  • Understands how to create great tasting, safe food that achieves cost goals and meets all the shelf-life criteria
  • Leads and educates internal and external customers in the technical aspects of product development.
  • Assess and evaluates new product and process opportunities.
  • Makes recommendations for new ingredient / processing technologies
  • Investigates food safety and technical problems
  • Develops new uses for existing products
  • Manages projects and plant costs
  • Assists in maintaining sanitation, inventory and equipment operation
  • Maintains an accurate record of work activities
  • Confers with the management on long range plans
  • Assists in achieving revenue/business goals
  • Stays apprised of technologies used by other food manufacturers

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have earned a B.S. Degree in Food Science, Chemistry or similar Science
  • Must be a foodie and have a passion for Mexican food, salsa and chilies
  • Must be able to “knock off” other products or concepts
  • Must have a great need to understand cost components
  • Must have a familiarity with current food trends: Non-GMO, Organic, Gluten Free, etc.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of Product Development, R&D experience - from concept to commercialization
  • Must have at least 3 years of Product Development and Formulation experience working with products similar to sauces
  • Must have knowledge in food chemistry.
  • Must have “hands-on” research and development experience
  • Must have extensive ingredient and flavor experience
  • Must be able to accurately prepare specifications and labels
  • Must have strong business acumen and demonstrate business knowledge by leading discussion and direction on project work
  • Must be creative, pro-active, have the ability to “think outside the box” and accept or create new ideas and take calculated risks on new products and process development
  • Must be able to collaborate with others in a fairly flat organizational structure
  • Must be able to multi-task and jump from project to project, yet still be a great finisher of projects
  • Must be willing to travel as needed (25% to 50%)
  • Must have strong computer skills and be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills and have excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Must have proven ability to interact effectively with internal and external customers

Required experience:

  • R&D experience in the food industry : 10 years

Required education:

  • Bachelor's

Required language:

  • Spanish is preferred
