SUMMARY: 

 

The Supplier Quality Assurance Technologist works internally across many functions and externally with suppliers to achieve and assure appropriate levels of Quality, Food Safety, and Legality for all raw materials and packaging materials used by Mars Food North America.

 

·        Continuously implement, operate, sustain, and improve assigned components of the Mars Global Material Quality Management standard (MQM)

 

·        Driving positive change, through working with suppliers to ensure continuous process improvement, as well as continuous quality and food safety improvement  

 

·        Supporting business efficiency and COGS initiatives related to raw material and packaging material pipeline

 

·        Participate in project teams in order to proactively manage material quality & food safety related aspects of a project, and ensure proper visibility of risks, hurdles, and/or successes.  Understanding the “business of science” – being able to translate the message around a  technical risk into a relevant business risk point of view

 

·        Support regional & global efforts to drive the Mars Supplier Quality Assurance program to best in class, through participation in cross-functional and global working teams.   (ie  best practice sharing, standard development, training & capability development, etc)

 

 

III.        PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:       

 

·        Planning Horizon = 2-4 years.  Complex pipeline improvement projects that may require 2-4 years for implementation.   Ability to layout 4-year audit plan for supply base.   

 

·        Assures quality, food safety, and legality of raw and packaging material supply to all Mars Food North America manufacturing sites, and to applicable contract manufacturers.  

 

·         Working in partnership with Commercial and site-based Quality Services; helps to identify and execute inbound material cost, quality, and efficiency improvement projects

 

·        Performs supplier site audits (risk assessments) and ensures completion of  identified corrective actions; proactively anticipates and identifies  quality and food safety risks in the supply chain; and suggests means of eliminating or reducing these risks to an acceptable level.    Partners with Commercial Buying function to execute Supplier Quality Assurance metrics program, including supplier performances reviews

 .

·        Material-related exception & nonconformance management

 

·        Complete Supplier Quality Assurance commitments related to the Material Risk Assessment process (MRA)  

 

·        Represent North American Food through participation in Global Food SQA Steering Team and Global Material Quality Management (MQM) Community.

 

 

IV.       DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY:        

 

Decisions:

·        Suitability of a supplier’s ability to supply Mars with quality & food safe materials

·        Product conformance relative to specifications or other published requirements

·        Adequacy of  a supplier’s corrective action / true root cause analysis

·        Risk categorization of suppliers/materials

·        Prioritization of continuous improvement activity and resource allocation to achieve improvements

·        Temporary or permanent delisting and/or exiting of a supplier based on risk and/or performance

 

 

Recommendations:  

·        Inputs into global Supplier Quality Assurance and sourcing strategies

·        Influences sourcing strategy

 

 

V.        KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

·        Essential command of food engineering / food processing

·        Essential command of Food Law / Food Regulatory Matters (USA, Canada)

·        Advanced knowledge of Quality & Food Safety Management processes, including:

o    Packaging material quality / Packaging processing  

o    Auditing / Lead Auditing

o    Validation / Verification

o    Process Improvement methodologies (Six Sigma, Lean Principles, etc)

o    Statistical Process Control

o    Root cause analysis, Failure Modes Effects Analysis

o    Corrective and preventive action

o    Food allergen management

o    Experience with consumer demand aspects, such as Organic, Kosher, Halal, Gluten Free

o    Integrated Pest Management

o    Food microbiology  

· Solid verbal and written communication skills

· Willingness to travel up to 50-60% of time

 

 

VI. Education & Experience Desired

 

·        BS degree in Biology, Chemistry, Food Science, Engineering or related technical field

 

·        4+ years experience in a technical area within the food industry such as R&D product development, quality assurance, laboratory management, manufacturing, or food engineering

 

·        Current Lead Auditor Certification (i.e. ISO, GFSI, etc)

·        Budget : Travel and Expense Budget Management (approx. $150K)

·        Delivery new supplier evaluations, and existing supplier Q&FS management activities

·        Entities who supply and/or manufacture raws, packaging, or premia materials for Mars Food NA.

·        Multiple internal cross functional clients (Q&FS, Asian Sourcing Team, Supply, Innovation platforms, Battlefield Teams)
