The Role

The Site Food Safety and QA Director leads the Food Safety/QA team and sets the Food Safety agenda for the operation. Essentially Site Food Safety and QA Director is accountable for the safety validation of all processes and product. i.e., to ensure we are ‘doing the right things’. The Site Food Safety and QA Director ensures that the team are ‘doing things right’ (i.e verification) through the development of the Quality Management system through Food Safety and QA services, its implementation, through the QA Manager and maintaining an appropriately clean production environment through the sanitation team. The Site Food Safety and QA Director drives continuous improvement of standards and manages liaison with the Division Quality team and Product Development, regulatory bodies (USDA, FDA, Dept Health) and is a member of the site senior management team.

Key Accountabilities

• Manage, motivate, coach and develop the Food Safety and QA teams.
• Ensure compliance with legal regulation
• Ensure compliance with USDA/FDA/Health regulation
• Validate and verify the site HACCP plans
• Validate and verify site SSOP’s
• Control microbiological standards in the environment and product by defining robust processes and systems to verify compliance.
• Define site layout and services from a Food Safety and QA perspective.
• Define and oversee the development and implementation of the Quality Management System
• Maintain GFSI accreditation
• Develop the site Food Safety and QA Strategic plan
• Lead by example as a visible presence in the factory, coaching, training and enforcing food safety and quality standards.

Skills & Experience

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE (Years/Type):

• 10 years+ management experience in high care, short shelf life fresh chilled foods or similar with responsibility for the development and performance management of teams.
• USDA/FDA/State health department liaison and management (including audit, response, communications)
• Knowledge of key legislation as defined by federal and state regulatory bodies.
• Educated to degree level, preferably in a Food related discipline with good microbiological knowledge.
• FDA/USDA accreditation HACCP trained
• Broad experience in Food manufacturing preferably with short shelf life fresh savory products and with knowledge of key processes (eg: thermal processing (Pasteurization, retorting), produce washing and product assembly)
• Control of spend within a defined budget
• Experience of dealing with retails customers
• Experience of developing and operating GFSI quality management systems such as BRC or SQF (or similar).
• Trained internal/external auditor.
• Implementation of systems to measure and report Food Safety and QA Key Performance Indicators.
• Knowledge of the delivery of systems to support New Product Development (eg: Ingredient declaration, shelf life determination, Nutritional declaration, process development trials)
• Certified Food Scientist (IFT) or CP-FS beneficial
